TORONTO, Ont. – The Laurier Golden Hawks men's soccer team upset the Carleton Ravens 2-1 in the provincial semi-final earlier on Saturday.
The Hawks, ranked No. 9 in the nation, won in penalty kicks over the No. 1 nationally ranked Ravens, with a score of 4-2.
The win advances the team to the CIS National Championships next weekend in Ottawa, Ont. Laurier was last at the nationals in 2001 where they claimed gold against UBC 2-1.
Laurier opened scoring first in the contest on a goal by Ben Clifford (Milton, Ont.). The goal was Clifford's second of the 2008 campaign. Carleton's Marco Ianni tied up the game at the 45th minute of the first half with his first goal of the year.
The game stayed at ones forcing overtime where the Hawks scored on four penalty kicks while Carleton only two. Laurier's Matt Smith (Oakville, Ont.), Alex Doma (Burlington, Ont.), Chris Walker (Mississauga, Ont.) and Richard Martins (Cambridge, Ont.) all hit the mesh. Martin's goal was the game winner as the final two Carleton players missed the net completely.
"For us to make nationals is an incredible achievement," commented head coach and OUA West Coach of the Year Mario Halipir. "Full credit to this group of players for pulling together some great plays and holding Carleton back."
