OUA ANNOUNCES 2008 MEN'S SOCCER MAJOR AWARD WINNERS AND ALL-STARS

HAMILTON, Ont. - Ontario University Athletics (OUA) is pleased to announce the 2008 men's soccer major award winners and All-Stars.
The top team in the country, the Carleton Ravens, receive two major awards. Sandy Mackie is named East Division Coach of the Year. Mackie lead the Ravens to a 12-1-1 record this season, best in OUA.
Ravens player Javier Robles (Madrid, Spain) is awarded the T. Litzen Sports Ltd. East Division Rookie of the Year. Robles is a strong defender for Carleton, and recorded two goals in 12 games.
Nordo Gooden (Kingston, Jamaica) of the Toronto Varsity Blues is the East Division Community Service Award winner. Gooden acts as a University of Toronto camp counsellor, a community club coach, Blues Soccer Academy staff coach and a volunteer coach for Westview Collegiate Institute.
Goalkeeper Scott Cliff (Sudbury, Ont.) of the Laurentian Voyageurs is the East Division Most Valuable Player. Cliff (pictured) played in net for 12 of Laurentian's 14 games posting a 6-3-3 record with six shutouts.
Joining Cliff on the OUA East Division First Team All-Star team is Voyageurs teammate Tony Tagliafierro (Sudbury, Ont.). Ravens earning honours include Nicholas Perichino (Thunder Bay, Ont.), Ahmad Berjawi (Ottawa, Ont.) and Canada's top goal scorer Matthew D'Angelo (Ottawa, Ont.). Niko Pesa (Burlington, Ont.), Mario Nallira (Toronto, Ont.), Dustin Chung (Toronto, Ont.) and Yannis Gianniotis (Toronto, Ont.) make the list from the Varsity Blues. Mustafa Zafadreh (Peterborough, Ont.) from the Nipissing Lakers and Goran Vlaski (Sarajevo, Bosnia) from the Ryerson Rams round off the list.
Robles is joined on the OUA East Second Team All-Star list by fellow Ravens Arjun Langford (Oakville, Ont.) and Craig Deebank (Pickering, Ont.). Andrew Posteraro (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.) and J.P. Sauve (Pembroke, Ont.) make the team from Laurentian. Thaddues Bolton (Bowmanville, Ont.) and Matt Pontin (Pefferlaw, Ont.) from the Trent Excalibur are honoured. The Queen's Gaels are represented by Mike Zanetti (Carp, Ont.). Toronto's Lawrence Buchan (Port Moody, B.C.), Ryerson's Vince D'Elia (Vaughn, Ont.) and Nipissing's Mohammed Nyangado (Gambia) are also named to the Second Team.
The No. 9-ranked Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks claim two West Division major awards. Coach of the Year is awarded to Mario Halapir. Halapir lead his Hawks to a 7-3-4 record, good for second in the West Division.
Laurier's Imran Ahmed (Windsor, Ont.) receives the West Community Service Award. Ahmed is an instructor at Elite Athletes International, a soccer academy in Waterloo region that develops players aged six to 16 in the sport. Ahmed is also the president of both the Lettermen Club and the Italian Club at Wilfrid Laurier University.
The No.4-ranked York Lions sit atop the OUA West Division with this year's Most Valuable Player. Francesco Bruno (Toronto, Ont.) receives the honour. Bruno is tied for second in Canada in scoring with 10 goals this season.
Western's Pat Mroczek (St. Catharines, Ont.) is named West Division Rookie of the Year. Playing in all 14 Mustangs regular season games, Mroczek sits tied for fourth in Ontario for scoring with eight goals.
Joining Bruno and Mroczek as West Division First Team All-Stars are Alim Karim (Scarborough, Ont.), Gerard Ladiyou (Burlington, Ont.), Franco Ruscetta (Woodbridge, Ont.) and Adrian Pena (Woodbridge, Ont.) from the Lions. Paul Seymour (Ottawa, Ont.), Scott Cameron (Pickering, Ont.) and Daniel Baxa (Nobelton, Ont.) from Western are named to the team. Matt Smith (Oakville, Ont.) and Alex Doma (Burlington, Ont.) from Laurier round out the First Team list.

Dan Valentini (Hamilton, Ont.), Brian Edgar (Niagara Falls, Ont.), Dan DePalma (Hamilton, Ont.) and Mazafar Rahaamtulla (St. Catharines, Ont.) of the Brock Badgers also get the nod.
