WESTERN 3, GUELPH 2
LONDON, Ont. - Mark Pocrnic scored a goal coming off the bench and giving Western life, while rookie Pat Mroczek scored two goals two minutes apart to give the Western Mustangs a 3-2 win over Guelph in the OUA West quarter-final at TD Waterhouse Stadium on Oct. 22.
After a scoreless and uneventful first half, all of the game's goals were scored in the final 20 minutes of the game.
Pocrnic (London, Ont.) got things going for the Mustangs striking a pass low to the right of Gryphons goalie Craig Boytchuk (Strathroy, Ont.) to give Western the 1-0 lead.
But Gryphons striker Juergen Koehler (Guelph, Ont.) scored a pair of goals one minute apart to give Guelph a brief 2-1 lead in the game.
Koehler's first goal was scored taking a pass in on his chest, turning and volleying the ball low past Mustangs netminder Kosta Viglatzis (Toronto, Ont.).
Then, just a minute later, Koehler scored again redirected a harmless looking chip into the 18-yard box which caught the Mustangs defence and goalkeeper off guard.
The innocent goal gave the Gryphons life and they looked to have taking over the game.
But Western persevered and superb rookie Mroczek (St. Catharines, Ont.) went to work. He tied the game heading the ball low past Boytchuk and then scored the game-winner just over a minute later making the Gryphons goalie pay for a bobbled ball in the six-yard box.
Guelph pressed late but Western held off their charge, clearing the ball out and defending well inside their own half.
Viglatzis finished with four saves and Western outshot Guelph 7-6.
The Mustangs will now face Wilfrid Laurier on Saturday Oct. 25 at 1 p.m. in the OUA quarter-final. The winner will advance to the OUA Final Four, hosted by the highest remaining seed in the OUA West.

LAURENTIAN 2, QUEEN'S 0
SUDBURY, Ont. - The Laurentian Voyageurs men's soccer team advanced to the OUA quarter-finals with a 2-0 victory over the Queen's Gaels on Wednesday afternoon. Rookies Johnny Maurizio and Davor Alisic tallied for the Voyageurs while Scott Cliff made nine saves to earn the shutout.
Queen's and Laurentian showed the fans in attendance that they came to play early with strong play at both ends of the field for each team. The Gaels were able to dominate the first 10 minutes before Laurentian began to take advantage of their home field and battle back. In the 20th minute the Laurentian men capitalized on a well placed corner kick by Derek Lubertino (Hamilton, Ont.) when Maurizio (Hamilton) headed home the eventual game winner.
Queen's countered quickly as they utilized one of many long throw-ins by Andrew Nador (Kingston, Ont.) to provide teammate Michael Arnold (London, Ont.) with a quality scoring chance. Fortunately for the Voyageurs goalkeeper Cliff (Sudbury, Ont.) was there to make the save. Queen's continued to utilize the long throw-in and thought they had evened the score in the 44th minute but a player was deemed offside allowing the Voyageurs to go into the break up 1-0.
In the second half, Queen's came out firing on all cylinders and had the Voyageurs on their heels mounting several attacks, including one almost breakaway that was stopped by a sliding Laurentian defender in the 64th minute. Even play returned
shortly thereafter, but with about 15 minutes remaining frustration began to boil over and undisciplined play began to appear for Queen's. Luckily, they regained their composure and shortly after a scoring chance by Laurentian they countered missing the net with a quality shot in the 80th minute. Queen's then continued to make Laurentian's goalkeeper make saves for the next couple of minutes, but could not capitalize on their opportunities.
In the 86th minute Laurentian put the game away for good when Lubertino once again made solid cross, this time over a Queen's
defender right onto the foot of Alisic (Charlottetown, P.E.I.) who made no mistake finding the back of the net and making the score 2-0. This was all the Voyageurs would need as they fended off any of Queen's last chance efforts in the waning moments.
"It's nice to get the win, I still think we can play better than that" said head coach Carlo Castrechino. "We battled hard against a tough opponent and our hard work paid off for us today."
The Laurentian Voyageurs men's soccer team now moves onto the OUA quarter-finals and will take on the CIS number-six ranked Toronto Varsity Blues on Sat., Oct. 25 at varsity stadium in Toronto.
