RAMS HIT WIN COLUMN WITH SHUTOUT OF VOYAGEURS
September 7, 2008
TORONTO - The Ryerson Rams capped off their men's soccer weekend doubleheader with a 3-0 victory over the visiting Laurentian Voyageurs at Lamport Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The Rams exploded out of the gate and were ahead 1-0 just three minutes in when Robert Galati (Toronto) found the back of the net on a beautiful play where Nyema Cheljahn (Toronto) let the ball go through his legs to Galati on a cross, fooling Voyageurs goalkeeper Andre Gomes (Woodbridge, Ont.).
Ryerson controlled the pace of the game in the first half and had a number of chances to increase the lead, including two close calls by Vince D’Elia (Vaughan, Ont.). The first-year midfielder missed just wide on a header off a corner kick as well as on a shot from the top of the penalty box.
Laurentian also came close to scoring a couple of times including a sequence of plays where Rams defender Alan Lewis (Thornhill, Ont.) blocked a close range shot and goaltender Robert Paolozzi (Toronto) made a spectacular save, punching the ball just over the crossbar.
The second half started much different than the first, with Laurentian coming out strong and almost tying the score a number of times. Paolozzi and the Ryerson defenders played strong, weathering the storm and keeping the lead.
In the 55th minute D’Elia finally connected on one of his chances, using some fancy footwork to beat two Voyageur defenders and find the back of the net. D’Elia's goal shifted the momentum back to the Rams as they controlled the remainder of the game. Ryerson had chances to increase the lead, including three close calls for striker Moses Kgasa (Gaborone, Botswana). D’Elia scored his second of the contest when he used his speed to beat the Laurentian defence at the 86th minute.
“Offence, defence, goaltending, everything came together today,” said Rams head coach Tony La Ferrara. “It was a very important win, because Laurentian is a team we usually battle with for a playoff spot.”
Carlo Castrechino, the Voyageurs head coach was pleased with his team’s first half effort but said, “We have to play 90 minutes if we’re going to be successful and we didn’t today.”
With the win the Rams improve their record to 1-1-1, earning four out of a possible six points in their weekend games. Laurentian's record dropped to 1-2 with the defeat. The Rams return to action on September 13 when they travel to Carleton to play the Ravens. The Voyageurs will host RMC, also on September 13.
