Guelph, Ont. – The Guelph Gryphons men's rugby team remains undefeated with a dominant 52-0 shut out against the Royal Military College Paladins on Thursday at Alumni Field. The Gryphons move to 4-0 on the season, with the Paladins dropping to 0-4.
"It was a great experience for the guys to play in a big venue and get another win. I am pleased with the 4-0 start to the season but we are only half way through and have to keep things in perspective. With a big break before our next game we will focus on rest, recover and our next task," said Gryphon head coach Darrell Devine.
The Paladins began the game strong, keeping the ball from the Gryphons with their quick and accurate passes. However, the Gryphons were able to use their physicality to change the momentum of the game quickly forcing RMC players out of bounds and dominating the lineouts.
The Gryphons would score their first try in the first five minutes of the game after regaining the ball on a lineout. The Gryphons would be able to get the ball out to the sidelines and out-run the Paladins to the goal zone, making it 7-0 early on in the game after a successful conversion by Joe Newman (Waterdown, Ont.).
The Gryphons would dominate the lineouts for the remainder of the game, scoring three tries after winning the ball on a line out. Once Guelph was able to get the ball out to their backs, they would use their speed and size to overcome the Paladins and score each time. At the end of the first half the Gryphons had scored five tries with four successful conversions to make it 33-0 against the Paladins.
The Gryphons would continue the momentum in the second half, scoring yet another try with the conversion less than two minutes into the start of the second half making it 40-0 for Guelph. The Paladins would hold the Gryphons to only 12 more points in the second half, with Guelph coming out with a 52-0 victory over RMC.
Joe Newman would lead scoring with six successful conversions and one try for 17 points, with Adam Maahs (Port Perry, Ont.) scoring 10 points for the team with two tries. Thomas Kelly (Guelph, Ont.), Eric Charest-Pekeski (Barrie, Ont.), Martin Damianoff (Guelph, Ont.), and Brandon McLeod (Baltimore, MA.) would score a try each to contribute to the total.
