Golden Hawks drop third straight game

WATERLOO, Ont., (November 2, 2014) - The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men's hockey team dropped their third straight game as they fell to the No. 10 Western Mustangs 4-3 Tuesday night at the Waterloo Recreation Complex.

Right after the first puck drop, the Hawks flew out of the gate scoring three goals in the first period. Captain Tyler Stothers of Oakville, Ont., scored his team-leading tenth goal of the season only 55 seconds into the game. Matt Provost of Oakville, Ont., and Mackenzie Braid of Mississauga, Ont., scored the other two goals for Hawks. Luke Hietkamp of London, Ont., assisted on two of the goals to lead Laurier in points for the night.

Unfortunately for the Hawks, that was all the offence they would generate for the rest of the game.

Stefan Salituro of Willowdale, Ont., led the charge for Western scoring a goal and adding two assists, while captain Steve Reese of Dorchester, Ont., had a goal and an assist in the game.

The special teams for the Golden Hawks were the story of this game. While the powerplay was able to find the back of the net once on three occasions, the short handed unit struggled against the number one powerplay in the OUA. The Mustangs scored two of their four goals on the powerplay. One of them came in the final minute of the second period on a two-man advantage from Kyle De Coste of London, Ont., which would stand as the game winner.

Goaltender Christopher Festarini of Oakville, Ont., kept the Golden Hawks in the game, stopping 43 of the 47 shots Western fired at him.

Marc Nother of London, Ont., picked up the win for the Mustangs making 31 saves on the night.

Laurier (5-10-1) look to snap their three game losing streak, as well as head into the break on a high note, when they travel to St. Catharines to take on the Brock Badges (7-7-1) Wednesday night. Puck drop is set for 7:15 p.m. at the Seymour-Hannah Centre.
