GRYPHONS WIN 2009 STEEL BLADE MEN'S HOCKEY TOURNAMENT
December 31, 2009
ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - The Guelph Gryphons are the Steel Blade Tournament champions after beating the host Brock Badgers 4-1 on Wednesday evening.
The Gryphons showed no signs of fatigue coming off their win over the Western Mustangs the night before and skated away from the Badgers in a fast paced and entertaining affair.
Brock opened the scoring on a power play in the first period by Derek Brochu but the Gryphons tied the game in the last minute of the opening period on a great individual effort by hometown rookie Mike Kusy.
Guelph managed the only goal of the second period when Pat Campbell (Sauble Beach, Ont.) intercepted a clearing pass in the Brock zone and fired a laser over the glove of Jordan Bent to give the Gryphons a 2-1 lead at the end of two. Guelph dominated the period and outshot the Badgers 12-1.
Thomas Kiriakou (Richmond Hill, Ont.) settled the issue in the third period with his eighth point of the tournament with the insurance marker to put the Gryphons up 3-1 and Geoff Guimond (Mississauga, Ont.) added an empty netter with just over a minute left in the final.
Scott Van Bommel recorded the win and the Gryphons outshot the Badgers 37-24 on the evening.
This is the first Championship for the Gryphons at the Steel Blade Tournament.
The Gryphons return to action on Jan. 2 in Buffalo, N.Y. when they face the Canisius Golden Gryphons. Guelph is currently on an eight game road swing before returning home Jan. 14 when they host the Waterloo Warriors in league action.
