OUA M-HOCKEY ROUNDUP: TURKIEWICZ LIFTS MUSTANGS PAST GRYPHONS
October 16, 2009
GUELPH, Ont. - The Guelph Gryphons were hoping to taste sweet revenge on Thursday night after Western knocked them out of the playoffs last season, but couldn't hold off the Mustangs as they came back to take the 4-3 victory.
The loss sets the Gryphons back to 1-2-0, while Western (1-2-0) claims their first win of the season.
Western's Keaton Turkiewicz (Brantford, Ont.) scored the game-tying goal in the second period and added the game-winner in the third. Chris Corbeil (Oakville, Ont.) and Geoff Killing (Embro, Ont.) also scored for the Mustangs.
After getting a night off last week against Laurier, Matt Smith (Waterloo, Ont.) was back between the pipes for the Gryphons. Smith made 12 saves in the game including an unbelievable kick-save near the end of the first period.
Guelph was disappointed by another early game goal in the first period after the rebound from a hard shot was banged in by Western. As per usual, Guelph didn't hesitate to respond. Two minutes later, while on the penalty kill, Jake Lalonde (Sudbury, Ont.) pressured a Western defencemen into giving up the puck in the Western end. Lalonde gained possession, slid the puck over to Thomas Kiriakou (Richmond Hill, Ont.), who ripped the shorthanded goal top corner for his fifth of the season.
The Gryphons picked up their second of the night after a bone-crushing hit on the Western blue line that left Justin Gvora (Thunder Bay, Ont.) with the puck. After a nice little drop pass to Michael Nelson (Startford, Ont.) and a hard shot from just inside the zone, Derek Knowles (Vanderhoof, B.C.) fought for the rebound and put it in the back of the net.
Just over 10 seconds later, Matt Lyall (Richmond Hill, Ont.) came streaking down the sideboards from center ice. Pulling the puck back at the top of the circle, Lyall sniped a top corner insurance marker, making the score 3-1.
Western made a goalie change following the third Gryphon goal and would close the gap to 3-2 before the end of the period
The Gryphons came out racing in the second taking control for the first half of the period. Unfortunately, after a poor play behind the net, the Mustangs were able to flip a quick shot on net that trickled in behind Smith and tied the game at three.
The Gryphons had a number of high quality chances in the second period but the bounces just weren't going their way.
The third period saw a devastating goal just slip past Smith to give the Mustangs the 4-3 lead and win.
Keyvan Hunt (Port Coquitlam, B.C.) got the start in net for Western but struggled, allowing three goals on six shots. Rookie netminder Anthony Grieco (Brampton, Ont.) came in to replace him and made 36 saves for the win.

The Golden Hawks started the second period with some momentum on Rizk's goal and pressured the home team early and often in their own zone. Laurier also had two back-to-back power play opportunities but weren't able to capitalize.
Waterloo opened up the third period with an early goal. Kurt Thorner (St. Thomas, Ont.) scored the goal beating a screened Ryan Daniels (Pickering, Ont.) to tie up the game. Following a huge hit by Waterloo, Thorner broke into Laurier's zone and was hauled down. On the resulting penalty shot, Steve Whitley (Petrolia, Ont.) filled in for the injured Thorner and beat Daniels low in the left corner under his glove to give the home team their first lead of the game.
After the two quick goals by the Warriors, Laurier quickly got back into the game with a power play marker by Rizk who buried a Hartigan rebound for his third of the season. The Warriors bounced back quickly with a power play marker of their own. On the play following Laurier's goal, Kyle Van De Bospoort (Pickering, Ont.) took a high sticking call and Cory Fraser (Pictou, N.S.) beat Ryan Daniels.
Former RMC Paladin Paul Bradley (Calgary) picked up his first goal in the purple and gold with less than four minutes left to play. Clinton Pettapiece floated a pass across Waterloo's crease and Bradley finished it with a backhander. Jason Bergeron (Ancaster, Ont.) gave the Golden Hawks the go ahead goal with 1:51 left to play. The Warriors Shane Hart (Guelph, Ont.) scored just 40 seconds later off a redirected shot from a faceoff.
In overtime, Laurier pinned the Warriors in their own zone, but on an ensuing break out Waterloo's Steve Whitely raced down the ice and picked up the game winner. Waterloo is now 3-0-0 on the season.
