BROCHU LEADS BADGERS PAST RIDGEBACKS IN MEN'S HOCKEY

OSHAWA, Ont.- The Brock Badgers men's hockey team (1-0-0) opened the 2009-10 OUA regular season with a 3-1 victory over the UOIT Ridgebacks on the road Saturday night.
After a scoreless first, UOIT opened the scoring just 58 seconds into the second period when Nathan Spaling beat Brock first-year goaltender Mark Yetman (Mount Pearl, Nfld.) for his first of the season.
Brock sophomore Derek Brochu (Welland, Ont.) tied the game 7:25 into the second period as he found the back of the net on Ridgebacks rookie Jason Guy for his first of the campaign. Senior George Bradley (Burlington, Ont.) and sophomore Steve Miller (Thunder Bay, Ont.) recorded assists on the goal.
In the third period, Brock broke it open answering with back-to-back-goals in the first three minutes to take a 3-1 lead. Brock took the lead just 58 seconds into third when Brochu set up CIS transfer Vince Scott for his first goal in a Badger uniform.
Just over two minutes later, senior Eric Toonders (Winchester, Ont.) and Scott would set up Brochu for his second goal and third point of the night. For his performance, Brochu was named tonight's first star.
In goal Yetman turned aside 22 Ridgebacks shots for his first career victory. UOIT's Guy suffered the loss allowing three goals on 22 shots.
