CAPTAINS NAMED FOR LAKERS HOCKEY
September 30, 2009
NORTH BAY, Ont. - With the puck set to drop for the season opener on Oct. 2, and a tournament victory in the bank, the Nipissing Lakers OUA men's hockey team today solidified their on-ice leadership by naming the first captain and assistant captains in franchise history.
Matt Lahey will wear the captain's C, while John Quarrie, Dan Watt and Brodie Beard will each wear the assistant captains' A.
Lahey, a 6-foot-2, 200 pound right wing from Oshawa, Ont., played last year for the Ottawa 67's in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) and the Moncton Wildcats in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.
"Being named the first captain in franchise history is a huge honour," said Lahey. "We've got a great group of guys here. I think if we play together as a team and support each other on and off the ice, we'll be able to have some success this year. As captain, I need to lead by example, work hard and be accountable."
Quarrie is a 6-foot-2, 185 pound defenceman from Elora, Ont., who played last year with the OHL's Oshawa Generals. Watt is 6-foot-1, 195 pound left wing from Winnipeg, Man., who played last year with the Winnipeg Saints of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League. Beard is a 6-foo-1, 220 pound defenceman from South Porcupine, Ont., who played last year with Carleton University.
"This is a good leadership group for this team," said Lakers head coach, Mike McParland. "It's our first year in the OUA, and we are expecting to have some ups and downs. How we respond to those ups and downs is the important part, and these guys can lead by example. They all bring significant skills and hockey intelligence to the team as well as some of the more intangible qualities like being prepared, working hard in practice and being committed to the team."
The Lakers open the regular season at Memorial Gardens on Oct. 2, at 7 p.m. versus the Queen's Gaels.
