NEW ADDITION TO RIDGEBACKS MEN'S HOCKEY TEAM HAS LOCAL CONNECTION
June 29, 2009
OSHAWA, Ont. - As the temperature rises in the summer months, University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) men's hockey head coach Marlin Muylaert is working intensely at making the 2009-10 recruiting class the best the school has seen. Muylaert is excited to announce that Mactier, Ont. native and former Oshawa junior player, Scott Baker will be joining the Ridgebacks for their third season.
Baker began his junior career in Oshawa as a member of the Legionnaires in 2003-04 where he picked up 16 goals and 14 assists in 47 games. During that season, Baker also played six games with the Oshawa Generals where he scored his first Ontario Hockey League (OHL) goal. He spent the next two seasons in the OHL with the Belleville Bulls where he had 20 goals and 34 assists in 120 regular season games. His 45 points in 2005-06 made him the Bulls second leading scorer that season. Baker wrapped up his OHL career with a brief stop with the St. Michael's Majors in 2006-07.
"Scott can play centre or the wing. He brings a very good skill set, excellent offensive instinct and has great speed," said Muylaert. "We've got guys here that he has played with before so he should be comfortable and an asset to our team over the next few years."
Baker played on a line with Ontario University Athletics (OUA) West rookie of the year and 2008-09 UOIT freshman of the year Josh Vatri (Barrie, Ont.) in minor hockey, as well as with Ridgebacks defencemen Steve Spade (Rochester, N.Y.) with the Belleville Bulls. He has also been a teammate of Ridgebacks second year goalie Jeff Dawson (Bracebridge, Ont.).
The addition of Baker adds a forward to the 2009-10 recruiting class which already consists of defencemen Jeff Barletta (Port Stanley, Ont.) and John McCullough (Barrie, Ont.) along with goalie Jason Guy (Whitby, Ont.). The Ridgebacks are entering their third season in OUA hockey and are coming off a school best 19 points in the 2008-09 season.
