MCGILL'S URQUHART RE-SIGNS WITH HARTFORD WOLF PACK
June 15, 2009
MONTREAL, Que. - David Urquhart, a former all-Canadian defenceman with the McGill Redmen, has re-signed for a second season with the Hartford Wolf Pack, the American Hockey League affiliate of the NHL's New York Rangers.
The 24-year-old defenceman from Thorold, Ont., logged 58 games of AHL action with the Wolf Pack last season, scoring six goals and 14 points, with 36 penalty minutes and a plus-13 rating in the plus-minus statistics. The six-foot, 195-pound rearguard was scoreless and plus-1 in six post-season games.
Prior to being called up to the Wolf Pack last fall, Urquhart registered five assists and 10 PIMs in seven games with the Charlotte Checkers of the East Coast Hockey League.
A three-time all-star at McGill, he graduated with a commerce degree in 2008, earning academic all-Canadian honours and receiving a Gretta Chambers award for leadership. He captained the Redmen to the Ontario University Athletics conference championship in 2008, McGill's first Queen's Cup league title since 1946.
Urquhart originally signed with the Wolf Pack last July, after totalling 23 goals and 107 points, along with 330 penalty minutes in 147 career games over four seasons at McGill. He is tied with Detroit Red Wings coach Mike Babcock as the sixth-highest point-scoring defenceman in McGill history. They trail Gilles Hudon (152 points), Martin Routhier (135), David Bahl (110), Bryan Larkin (109) and Luc Latulippe (109).
Urquhart was also a two-time conference representative for the CIS Randy Gregg trophy, for combining hockey ability with academics and citizenship.
He joined the Redmen in 2004 out of Junior B in Welland, Ont., and went on to become the sixth player produced by McGill in recent years to skate in the AHL, joining a list that includes Daniel Jacob (2004), Greg Davis (2001), Mathieu Darche (2000), Pierre Gendron (1997) and Jim Webster (1980).
