FORMER WARRIOR SCORES FIRST PROFESSIONAL GOAL
March 20, 2009
WATERLOO, Ont. - Doug Spooner completed five years at the University of Waterloo and has now traveled across the continent to play professional hockey.
Spooner earned a Political Science degree and has received permission to complete the Masters of Political Science program from a distance. He has become a member of the California-based Ontario Reign of the East Coast Hockey League.
Spooner had a tremendous impact on the Waterloo men's hockey program. He was one of the first recruits when the rebuilding of the Warriors began. He joined the program in 2004-05 after the team had only earned a total of 12 wins in the previous three seasons. In five years with the Warriors their record was 85-38-6-3.
Spooner leaves the Warriors having played 129 regular season games, more than any player in the program's 50-year history. Spooner also scored 63 goals (third all-time) and added 56 assists for a total of 119 points (seventh all-time).
"I have seen Doug mature into a great hockey player and more importantly a great person and leader," reflected Warriors head coach Brian Bourque. "He exemplifies all that Warrior Hockey stands for. He has shown up to the rink every day with a hard working determined attitude and we are glad he now has an opportunity to prove himself at the pro level."
Spooner joins former Warrior players Shawn Germain (2004-06) and Ryan MacGregor (2004-2007) and former Warrior head coach Karl Taylor (2003-04) on the ECHL Pacific Division-leading Ontario Reign. Taylor was head coach of the Warriors when Spooner joined the team.
In Spooner's first professional game on March 13th he scored his first goal to help the Reign defeat the Victoria Salmon 4-3.
