OUA M-HOCKEY ROUNDUP: GEE-GEES, RAVENS FORCE GAME 3
February 21, 2009
OTTAWA, Ont. – Rookie Matthieu Methot (Ottawa, Ont.) scored the opening goal and assisted on two others as the Ottawa Gee-Gees men's hockey team hung on for a 3-2 playoff victory over the McGill Redmen and staved off elimination Friday.
The best-of-three OUA East Conference quarter-final series is knotted at 1-1 with the rubber match, slated for Feb. 22 at McConnell Arena (3 p.m.). The winner of this series will advance to a best-of-three affair against the No.2-seeded Toronto Varsity Blues.
While Methot, a former Ottawa 67's star, was doing his thing in the offensive zone, goaltender Riley Whitlock, a sophomore from Calgary, almost single-handedly dismantled the Redmen, who outshot Ottawa by an overwhelming 48-16 advantage, including a 17-1 difference in the final frame.
Kevin Glode (Quebec City, Que.) converted a pass from Methot to make it 2-0 Ottawa at the 1:43 mark of the middle period but McGill freshman Alexandre Picard-Hooper connected on a power play a few minutes later to put the Redmen on the scoreboard.
Keven Gagne, a senior right winger from St. Nicolas, Que., restored the two-goal cushion for Ottawa with a power play goal at 6:53 but McGill battled back again when rookie Francis Verrault-Paul (Mashteviatsh, Que.), beat Whitlock at 9:09 of the middle period.
Whitlock (1-1) took over after that and held the Redmen power play to a 1-for-8 performance as the Gee-Gees were assessed the final five penalties of the game.
Newcomer Kevin Desfossés (1-1) took the loss, only his third in 10 starts overall with McGill.

Best-of-three series tied 1-1
OTTAWA, Ont. - The Carleton Ravens men's hockey team defeated the Concordia Stingers 2-1 at the CU Ice House on Friday night to force a third and decisive game on Sunday in Montreal.
For the Ravens this marks their first post-season victory in the modern era of the varsity program. Led by an excellent defence, great goaltending by rookie Alex Archibald (Ottawa, Ont.) who earned his first career OUA post-season victory, and tremendous fore checking, especially by forward Shane Bakker (Ottawa, Ont.) who was outstanding the entire night, the Ravens would not be denied the post-season victory in front of the home crowd.
The Ravens started off the same way they did in the first game, dominating play and taking it to Concordia. They would outshoot the Stingers 14-10 in the first period, and pepper Stingers goaltender Maxime Joyal (Châteauguay, Que.) with shots from all over the ice.
The Ravens also showed their poise during a stretch when the referee called five straight penalties against Carleton, including killing off a two-man advantage in which Carleton's defence did not allow a shot on Archibald.
In the second period, Carleton continued to put pressure on Concordia's defence and their hard work paid off at the four-minute mark when Derek Wells (Aylmer, Que.) scored his first post-season goal of the 2009 campaign. Ryan Berard (Niagara Falls, Ont.) picked up the assist on the Ravens first goal.
Carleton continued to hold onto the lead until a Stingers power play with five minutes remaining in the period, when Eric Begin (St. Lambert, Que.) tied the game with assists to Brad Gager (Dorval, Que.) and Nicolas Lafontaine (Gatineau, Que.). The shots were even at 14 each as both teams skated into the intermission tied at one.
In the third period, there was more end-to-end action and with six minutes gone in the final period, Andrew Self (Peterborough, Ont.) notched a piece of Carleton men's hockey history scoring the first winning post-season goal in more than 30 years. Mike Testa (Ottawa, Ont.) and Brandon MacLean (Burlington, Ont.) set up the winning goal as Carleton would hold on to earn the victory over Concordia.
The game ended the way it started with several penalties being assess after the final whistle. While the game was an exciting post-season tilt, it was filled with penalties as the referee called 32 penalties during the game.
Archibald stopped 36 Stingers shots for the victory as Carleton out shot Concordia 43-37.
