OUA M-HOCKEY ROUNDUP: THUNDERWOLVES SWEEP NO. 6 MUSTANGS
February 16, 2009
THUNDER BAY, Ont. - OUA Far West Division rivals Lakehead Thunderwolves and Western Mustangs have a history of tough, competitive games against one another, and Saturday night's game at the Fort William Gardens in Thunder Bay, Ont. definitely illustrated that fact, to say the least.
Saturday's contest, which was the last game of the OUA men's hockey regular season, saw the Wolves battle past the Mustangs to a 4-3 overtime victory in a game which was as rough as it was exciting. Coming off of Friday night's 5-1 victory over Western, the Wolves were looking to end their season with a victory in hopes of gaining home ice advantage for the first round of the OUA playoffs, something that was nullified as Waterloo, the team Lakehead was battling for the coveted fourth seed in the Western conference, managed to scrape out a 1-0 win over Windsor on Saturday night, allowing them to pull ahead of the Wolves, who in turn wound up fifth.
With the victory, Lakehead finishes the season 18-8-1-1 in OUA play, while Western's loss moves the team to 19-8-1 in OUA play, good enough for second in the conference.
Western's potent offence clicked right out of the gate, as fifth-year senior Sal Peralta (Leamington, Ont.) snapped his ninth goal of the season past Lakehead netminder Chris Whitley (Oshawa, Ont.) just 1:05 into the game, giving the Mustangs a 1-0 lead. It would be short lived, however, as Lakehead freshman defenceman Kalvin Sagert (Abbotsford, B.C.) was able to knot the game at 1-1 just 1:54 later on a power play marker assisted by forwards Scott Dobben (Drayton, Ont.) and Kris Hogg (Sicamous, B.C.).
Midway through the first, Western would jump ahead again, this time on a power play goal by Yasmir Farmanara (West Vancouver, B.C.). Not to be outdone, the Wolves would bring the game back to square one when fifth-year senior Richard Molenaar (North Delta, B.C.) scored his third goal of the year with 3:33 remaining in the frame. The assists were given to junior forward Brock McPherson (Brampton, Ont.) and junior defenceman Jordan Smith (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.).
The teams battled through the entire second period, and most of the third, without either team being able to solve the opposing goaltender. Finally, with just 2:26 remaining in the game, Hogg was able to beat Western goaltender Keyvan Hunt (Coquitlam, B.C.), giving the Wolves a late game 3-2 lead.
It would not be enough, however, as the Mustangs called a timeout to regroup, and with just 1:17 remaining in the contest, freshman forward Aaron Snow (Windsor, Ont.) potted his 14th goal of the year, with assists going to Ryan Martinelli (London, Ont.) and Chris Petrow (Haliburton, Ont.), sending the game into overtime tied at 3-3.
In overtime, the Mustangs found themselves shorthanded when Petrow took a tripping penalty at the 2:54 mark, giving the Thunderwolves a crucial 4-on-3 power play. With just 55 seconds left on the clock, Hogg picked up where he left off in the third and netted his second goal of the game from McPherson and Andrew Brown (Bancroft, Ont.), giving his team a 4-3 victory to close out the regular season in style.
Lakehead will be back in action on Wednesday night when they face off against the Waterloo Warriors in Game 1 of the first round of the OUA playoffs at the Fort William Gardens in Thunder Bay, Ont.

NO. 9 WATERLOO 1, WINDSOR 0
WINDSOR, Ont. - The Windsor Lancers men's hockey team wrapped up their regular season schedule on Saturday night with a heartbreaking 1-0 loss to the Waterloo Warriors at Windsor Arena.
As a result, the Lancers finish the season with a record of 13-13-2 and miss the playoffs by only two points in the OUA West Division.
On Saturday night, the game was dominated by great goaltending as Windsor netminder Jim Watt (Edmonton, Alta.) and Waterloo netminder Pier-Olivier Pelletier (Saint-Louis-du-Ha! Ha!, Que.) were unbeatable in the opening two periods.
In the third, the Warriors converted midway through the period for the game's only goal and the 1-0 victory. Doug Spooner (Toronto, Ont.) scored the game-winner for Waterloo.
Watt was tremendous in goal again for the Lancers as he recorded 42 saves in the game. On the season, Watt finished first in Canada in total saves with 945, fourth in the nation in save percentage at .931, and fifth in the country in shutouts with four. He is also the only goaltender in Canada to play in all 28 games this season.

OTTAWA, Ont. - Second-year goaltender Riley Whitlock (Calgary, Alta.) stopped 30 shots and fourth-year centre Dan McDonald (New Liskeard, Ont.) scored twice and added one assist in the Ottawa Gee-Gees 3-0 home win over the Ryerson Rams on Sunday afternoon to close the regular season and secure an OUA playoff spot for a sixth straight season under head coach Dave Leger.
"A nice taste in my mouth for sure," said Whitlock, who recorded his second shutout of the season in leading the Gee-Gees to a 12-11-5 finish in the OUA Far East.
The Gee-Gees will meet McGill in the first game of a best-of-three East Division quarter-final Wednesday in Montreal.
McDonald had the Gee-Gees first goal in the second and final goal in the two-goal third period and also assisted on third-year defenceman Mathieu Desjardin's (Gloucester, Ont.) third-period power play goal.
"We're starting fresh," said McDonald. "We have a chance to mend some fences."
Third-year left wing Yanick Charron (Hull, Que.) finished with three assists.
Facing a must-win to keep its playoff hopes alive, the Gee-Gees defeated McGill 2-1 at the Sports Complex Saturday night.
The Redmen (18-8-2) finished the regular season nine points ahead of the Gee-Gees, good for second-place in the five-team Far East.
"During the year we gave up points we really shouldn't have," said Leger, who has gone past the second playoff round once in five previous seasons.
"We showed we can skate and play with that team."
