NO. 10 WARRIORS TOUGH ON RAMS IN MEN'S HOCKEY
February 5, 2009
TORONTO, Ont. - The Ryerson Rams men's hockey team saw its losing streak hit double-digits Wednesday night, as the squad fell 5-2 to the No. 10 Waterloo Warriors at George Bell Arena.
The first period was relatively even as both teams tried to find their rhythm early. Waterloo opened the scoring when Dave Philpott (Waterloo, Ont.) lured Ryerson goalie Louie George (Waterloo, Ont.) out of his goal before slipping a pass to Doug Spooner (Toronto, Ont.), who buried the puck into the open net. The Rams refused to go away, however, as Kevin Day (Toronto, Ont.) replied eight minutes later to knot the game at one heading into the first intermission.
But the Warriors' strong puck-possession game began to take its toll on the Rams in the second, as Waterloo would open up a 5-1 lead. Although Ryerson came out strong in the period, a goal from Shane Hart (Guelph, Ont.) at 6:52 would deflate any momentum the home side had built up. The Warriors would expand on their lead just 10 seconds later, as Mark Hartman (Lebret, Sask.) waltzed in alone to make it 3-1 midway through the game.
Penalties would then put the Rams in a deep hole as Donivan Munro (Toronto, Ont.) took a four-minute spearing penalty late in the middle frame. Waterloo would score twice with Munro in the box to take a commanding 5-1 lead and control of the match. Greg Payne (Thornhill, Ont.) would respond with his fourth of the year late in the third, but it was too little too late for Ryerson.
Although his Warriors were outshot 35-33, Keaton Hartigan (Kitchener, Ont.) was solid in goal for Waterloo, making several flashy glove saves to get his squad going. He earned the victory after making 33 stops. George turned aside 28 shots in the loss for Ryerson.
With the win, Waterloo improves to 16-5-2 and picks up two valuable points in a tight Far West Division. The Warriors will look to continue their playoff push Friday, when they meet division-rival Western (17-6-1). Ryerson sees its losing streak reach 10 games as its record sinks to 4-20-1. The Rams will now travel to Kingston for a match Friday against Queen's (10-13-2).
