OUA M-HOCKEY ROUNDUP: WARRIORS UPEND NO. 5 THUNDERWOLVES

THUNDER BAY, Ont. - The No. 5 Lakehead Thunderwolves men's hockey team lost 3-1 to the visiting Waterloo Warriors Friday night at the Fort William Gardens in Thunder Bay, Ont. It was a very physical, even, and fast paced game that was in contention until the very end.
Lakehead goes to 16-5-1-1 in OUA play while Waterloo now has a 14-5-0-2 OUA mark. Lakehead remains in second place in the OUA Far West battleground; five points behind Laurier, one ahead of Western, and four ahead of Waterloo.
The Wolves outshot Waterloo 36-24 on the night but new Warriors netminder Pier Pelletier (Saint-Louis-du-Ha! Ha!, Que.) was strong in goal, turning aside 35 shots as he notched his fourth win since joining Waterloo in the second half of the season. Lakehead netminder Chris Whitley (Oshawa, Ont.) also played well in the loss and now has an 8-2 OUA record.
Andy Hyvarinen (Thunder Bay, Ont.) scored Lakehead's tally while Waterloo's goals came from David Edgeworth (Kingston, Ont.), Chris Golem (St. Thomas, Ont.) and Doug Spooner (Toronto, Ont.), with Edgeworth and Spooner also picking up assists.
Lakehead head coach Don McKee was happy with his team's play.
"I think we played a very good game tonight but we couldn't bury our chances and we will need to regroup for tomorrow's game and work on finishing our opportunities."
The injuries continued to pile up for the Wolves as both sophomore defenceman Pierre-Marc Guilbault (St. Julie, Que.) and freshman forward Arron Alphonso (Orangeville, Ont.) suffered lower body injuries and were taken to hospital for diagnosis.
The Wolves will look for a series split as Saturday night as the two teams face off again at 7:30 p.m. at the Fort William Gardens.

TROIS-RIVIÈRES, Que. - The No. 3 UQTR Patriotes scored three goals in the third period for a 5-3 home win over Gee-Gees men's hockey Friday to avenge a crushing defeat against uOttawa seven days earlier.
The Patriotes, winners of 15 of the last 20 games against the Gee-Gees, outshot uOttawa 45-38 to improve to 20-2-1 in the OUA Far East.
UQTR, which scored an empty net goal in the final minute, made amends for a 3-2 home loss to the Gee-Gees last Friday. uOttawa fell to 9-10-4 with the loss.
Scoring for the Patriotes were Alexandre Demers (Laurier-Station, Que.), Nicolas Caouette (St-Liboire, Que.), Samuel Beland (Sherbrooke, Que.), Etienne Bellavance-Martin (St-Jean-Chrysostome, Que.) and Eric Beaudin (Laval, Que.).
First-year forward Phillipe Bolduc, fourth-year centre Dan McDonald (New Liskeard, Ont.) and third-year left wing Yanick Charron (Hull, Que.) scored for the Gee-Gees in the second period to erase a 2-0 deficit.
"We showed we could skate with them," said Gee-Gees head coach Dave Leger. "Now we have to be more consistent."

WATERLOO, Ont. - Craig Voakes (St. Thomas, Ont.) completed a hat-trick as the No. 6 Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks (19-4-1) defeated the Windsor Lancers (12-10-1) 8-0 at the Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex in front of 189 fans.
After having some rocky starts against division opponents in the last few games, the Golden Hawks finally got the start they wanted, peppering the visitors with 21 shots in the first period and scoring four goals.
Mark Voakes (St. Thomas, Ont.) opened the scoring for the Hawks just over the five minute mark. Another Voakes would score four minutes later, but this time Craig Voakes. The Golden Hawks leading scorer Jean-Michel Rizk (Dunham, Que.) picked up his 19th of the season while the home team had a power play.
Windsor pulled Jim Watt (Edmonton, Alta.) after only 11 minutes of play and replaced him with Johnathan Hunter (Tecumseh, Ont.). The switch didn't help as Craig Voakes notched his second of the game with the man-advantage. Laurier went 2-for-2 on the power play in the period.
Laurier team captain Nick Vergeer (West Lorne, Ont.) picked up the purple and gold's fifth goal of the contest seven minutes into the second period. The home team just kept going, with Nathan Peacock (Tilsonburg, Ont.) scoring just his fourth of the year, to extend the lead to six goals. Both teams put 13 shots on goal in the frame, evening out the scoring chances.
In the final period, the Golden Hawks kept capitalizing on opportunities as Luke Girard (Mississauga, Ont.) scored his 18th of the season just one minute in. Laurier continued to play hard as the game started to get chippy with the home team holding a large lead. Craig Voakes completed the hat-trick with about five minutes left to play. Voakes has scored five goals in his last two games.
Laurier's Jeff MacDougald (Shallow Lake, Ont.) earned his second shutout of the season by stopping all 26 shots. Windsor's goaltending tandem saw 47 shots and stopped 39.
