OUA M-HOCKEY ROUNDUP: WARRIORS WIN BATTLE OF WATERLOO
January 23, 2009
WATERLOO, Ont. - The Waterloo Warriors avenged two earlier losses to the No. 6-ranked Laurier Golden Hawks with an impressive 3-0 win on Thursday night.
Both teams entered the game without a loss in 2009 and aspirations of deep playoff runs. For Waterloo to win this game, they would need to shut down one of the most prolific offensive attacks in CIS. Laurier came into the game averaging more than eight goals a game in their last five and boasting four of the Top 6 scorers in OUA.
In the first period, the Warriors defence came in the form of a forceful offence. The Hawks could barely get the puck out of their end as the Warriors controlled the play for most of the period.
Laurier goaltender Jeff MacDougald (Shallow Lake, Ont.) turned aside several early Warriors' chances before Steve Whitely (Petrolia, Ont.) walked in from the point, lowered his head, and drilled a clapper into the bottom corner. Despite outshooting their opponent 13-4 in the frame, the Warriors were unable to score again and went to the dressing room up 1-0.
Laurier seemed to find their legs in the second period and the game opened up considerably. The two teams traded good chances throughout the frame, only to be denied by miraculous goaltending. Once again, Waterloo was the only team to score in the period on an unassisted marker by Mark Hartman (Lebret, Sask.) at the 14-minute mark.
The third period was a chippy, penalty filled affair that included two 10-minute misconducts (one per team) and a game misconduct to Waterloo's Brandon Mulholland (Newmarket, Ont.), who must now sit-out of Friday's match-up versus Western.
At times it appeared the Warriors were sitting back trying to protect their lead, which may have led to a Laurier comeback if not for the acrobatic goaltending of Pier Pelletier (Saint-Louis-du-Ha! Ha!, Que.). Pelletier had his third strong performance since joining the Warriors and brought his save percentage up to a ridiculous .986.
Doug Spooner (Toronto, Ont.) added some insurance for the Warriors with eight minutes left on a slick one-timer of a Dave Philpott (Windsor, Ont.) pass. When the horn sounded the Warriors walked away with perhaps their most impressive win thus far, much to the delight of a boisterous Waterloo cheering section.
The Warriors are back at it tonight when they host the No. 9 Western Mustangs at the CIF. The puck drops at 7:30 p.m.

GUELPH, Ont. - The Guelph Gryphons men's hockey team moves to 10-12-0-2 with an easy victory against the UOIT Ridgebacks (4-16-0-1) in Thursday's home-ice match-up. The Gryphons were led by forward Derek Knowles (Vanderhoof, B.C.), who notched a goal and two assists and goalie Adam Jennings (Calgary, Alta.) who recorded 37 saves. Although Guelph was clearly the superior team, the Ridgebacks managed to out-shoot Guelph 38-33.
The Gryphons jumped out to an early lead ringing a wrist shot off the post and in at 5:24 of the first. The Gryphons added another on a 2-on-1 where Justin Gvora (Thunder Bay, Ont.) fed a slick pass to Alex Magera (Edmonton, Alta.) who beat the sprawling UOIT goaltender with ease. Throughout the period, Guelph was in control despite losing in the shot count 15-7.
In the second period the Gryphons lit up the score sheet adding three goals to their lead. Thomas Laplante (Ste-Foy, Que.) scored a wrap-around goal and Patrick Campbell (Sauble Beach, Ont.) stepped out of the penalty box to receive a break-away pass from Knowles. Cutting in with speed, Campbell beat the UOIT goaltender with a quick blocker-side shot. Although dominating on the score sheet, the Gryphons exposed goaltender Jennings to numerous UOIT shots. After making an initial 5-hole stop on a breakaway, Jennings stacked his pads along his own goal line to prevent the loose puck from crossing as attacking UOIT players jammed away.
With the score already at 5-0 the third period did not bring much excitement. With five minutes remaining, UOIT's Shane Nolan (Enfield, N.S.) scored a power-play goal and dashed Jennings shutout hopes.
Tomorrow the Gryphons travel to Oshawa to complete their home-and-home series against the Ridgebacks. Puck drop is at 7:30 p.m.

TORONTO 5, RYERSON 2
TORONTO, Ont. - Five different Varsity Blues scored as the University of Toronto men's hockey team snapped their losing streak and defeated the Ryerson Rams 5-2 on Thursday at George Bell Arena.
Although the Blues dominated the play throughout the first period, outshooting the Rams 12-4, they were unable to put one past Ryerson goaltender Louis George (Waterloo, Ont.).
After the scoreless first period, in which the Blues outshot the Ram 12-4, it was Ryerson's Cory Konecny (Stoney Point, Ont.) who broke the deadlock, scoring his fourth goal of the season 2:06 into the second period. The Blues fought back, scoring four unanswered goals, including two power play markers in less than six minutes, to take a comfortable three-goal lead.
Steve Devine (Scarborough, Ont.) got Toronto on the board, finishing off a nice passing play with linemate Dan Brewer (Cambridge, Ont.). Within the next five minutes, first-year forward Kyle Ventura (Scarborough, Ont.) and veteran defenceman Ed Snetsinger (Ajax, Ont.) each scored on the power play, while Robert Kay (Orono, Ont.) was able to beat Rams goalie Louis George (Waterloo, Ont.) for the fourth time this period with a long wrist shot.
Ryerson forward Brent Small (Pickering, Ont.) would add a power play marker before the second period ran out and the Blues held a 4-2 lead going into the final frame.
The Rams came out hungry in the third period but the Blues stellar defensive play shut them down. Assistant captain Joe Rand (Hamilton, Ont.) added some insurance with eight minutes to go scoring his ninth goal of the season, and the Blues skated away with the 5-2 victory.
Rand picked up one goal and two assists, while Blues goaltender Russ Brownell (Oakville, Ont.) made 19 saves in the victory.
The Blues and Rams square off again this Saturday at Varsity Arena. The puck drops at 7:30 p.m.
