OUA M-HOCKEY ROUNDUP: RIDGEBACKS HANG TOUGH WITH NO. 2 PATRIOTES
January 19, 2009
OSHAWA, Ont. - Up against the No. 2 nationally-ranked UQTR Patriotes, the UOIT Ridgebacks men's hockey team knew they had a tough task ahead of them heading into their game on Saturday. UOIT would come up with a good effort, but fell just short of the major upset as the Patriotes escaped with a 4-2 win to improve to 18-1-1 on the year.
UOIT opened up scoring early in the game as Shane Nolan (Enfield, N.S.) netted his fifth goal of the year just two minutes after the opening puck drop. UQTR would answer back with three answered in the first and second period, to take the lead in the game. The Ridgebacks would find themselves in penalty trouble with Josh Vatri (Barrie, Ont.) and Steve Spade (Rochester, N.Y) being ejected from the game, leaving the team without two of their top impact players.
Trailing 3-1 in the third period, Derrick Bagshaw (Oshawa, Ont.) netted his seventh goal of the year to pull the Ridgebacks within one goal of the top ranked Patriotes. UOIT looked to tie the game in the late stages of the period but would fall short of the comeback as UQTR pulled out the win as they added an empty net marker with less than a minute left on the clock.
With his goal in the game, Bagshaw extended his scoring streak to five games to open up 2009. On the season, Bagshaw has seven goals and five assists in just 11 games.
Final shots in the contest were 32-23 in favour of UQTR. Jeff Dawson (Bracebridge, Ont.) made 28 saves in his fourth consecutive start for UOIT. The Ridgebacks were 0-for-4 on the power play while UQTR was 1-for-5.
UOIT did a good job holding the OUA's top leading scorers in check as Alexandre Demers (Laurier-Station, Que.) was held pointless while Jonathan Boutin (La Pocatiere, Que.) had one assist and an empty net goal.

NO. 5 LAKEHEAD 3, RYERSON 2
THUNDER BAY, Ont. - The CIS No. 5-ranked Lakehead Thunderwolves men's hockey team had to battle very hard to earn a tough 3-2 home win over the Ryerson Rams Saturday night at the Fort William Gardens in Thunder Bay, Ont. The game was nothing like Friday's game that saw the Wolves handle the Rams 8-0.
The game featured a lot of hard hitting from both sides and Ryerson really stepped up their game offensively and defensively from Friday while freshman goaltender Louis George (Waterloo, Ont.) played an incredible game between the pipes for the Rams, making a number of circus saves and turning aside 48 Lakehead shots.
Lakehead had a number of great scoring opportunities on the night but were denied again and again by the acrobatic George. Lakehead goalie Kyle Moir (Calgary, Alta.) picked up the win for the Wolves but he too had to be sharp; making a number of good saves throughout the game.
Lakehead's goals came from Drew Kivell (Lakeside, Ont.), Brock McPherson (Brampton, Ont.) and Andy Hyvarinen (Thunder Bay, Ont.). Hyvarinen also picked up an assist while freshman Arron Alphonso (Orangeville, Ont.) played perhaps his best game of the season, setting up two of the Lakehead goals. Donivan Munro (Toronto, Ont.) and Stewart D'Eall (Toronto, Ont.) scored for the Rams while Kevin Krasnowski (Pickering, Ont.) played a great game for the Rams notching two helpers.

NO. 6 LAURIER 6, QUEEN'S 1
WATERLOO, Ont. - For Luke Girard (Mississauga, Ont.), a goal is a goal, no matter which part of the body is used to score.
The power forward used his stick and his head to pace the sixth ranked Laurier Golden Hawks to a resounding 6-1 victory over the visiting Queen's Gaels in front of 365 on Saturday night at the Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex.
Queen's opened the scoring with a floater from the point that found its way under goalie Jeff MacDougald's (Shallow Lake, Ont.) arm and into the back of the net. MacDougald was screened on the goal and had little chance.
But Canada's most prolific offensive unit responded. Captain Nick Vergeer (West Lorne, Ont.) managed to jam home a puck that was hastily being fought for on the goal line to notch the game at one's.
After Girard put the Hawks up 2-1 in the second, thanks to a great around-the-net back across the crease pass from Clinton Pettapiece (Christina Lake, B.C.), the game saw a markedly quicker pace. Queen's needed to close the gap, and Laurier needed to widen it.
Laurier would win that battle, a dominating shift from Jean-Michel Rizk (Dunham, Que.) in which he threw two big hits and drew a penalty culminated in the Hawks third goal. A shot from the point bounced off of Girard's face and into the net to give the purple and gold a more comfortable cushion.
The Gaels remained in the game until late in the second period when Colin Williams (Orangeville, Ont.) netted his eighth of the season with a well-placed wrist shot.
Mark Voakes (St. Thomas, Ont.) and Williams would round out the scoring in the third period to bring a close to a chippy affair which saw five high sticking penalties, three unsportsmanlike conduct penalties and many crease crashes. The penalties would wind up being a curse to Queen's as Laurier went 4-for-10 with the man advantage.

NO. 10 WESTERN 9, RMC 2
LONDON, Ont. - Western Mustangs men's hockey head coach Clarke Singer earned his 200th win as a head coach as the Western Mustangs slammed the Royal Military College Paladins 9-2 at Thompson Arena on Jan. 16.
Sean Courtney (Ennismore, Ont.) scored three goals including the game-winner early in the second period, but both teams struggled on the power play going a combined 3-of-19.
Joe McCann (Essex, Ont.) added a pair of goals for Western, while Adam Nemeth (Amherstburg, Ont.), Patrick Ouellet (Baie-Comeau, Que.), Aaron Snow (Windsor, Ont.) and Jason Furlong (London, Ont.) added singles.
In a goalies duel early on, Keyvan Hunt (Port Coquitlam, B.C.) made three straight saves from in close to keep the game scoreless. While he appeared shaky at times, Hunt made 30 saves for his seventh win of the season.
