OUA M-HOCKEY ROUNDUP: VOAKES BROTHERS LEAD LAURIER PAST RYERSON
January 8, 2009
TORONTO, Ont. - The Voakes brothers scored a pair of goals each as the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks easily defeated the Ryerson Rams 10-1 at George Bell Arena.
The victory increased the No. 6 nationally-ranked Hawks' record to 14-2-1 while Ryerson drops to 4-11-1.
Craig Voakes (St. Thomas, Ont.), the younger of the two brothers, opened scoring just five minutes into the first, while on the power play. The 5-foot-11 forward picked up the other on the third goal of the contest in the second of four odd-man markers.
Older brother Mark Voakes scored his pair of goals within a minute and a half of the start of the second. He added another point on an assist in the first.
Jean-Michel Rizk (Dunham, Que.) increased his point total on the season to 34 (14 goals and 20 assists) with a team-high four-point night. Rizk scored the game winner as the second goal of the game.
Laurier's power play was three-for-five in the performance while the penalty-kill was perfect stopping all six opportunities.
"Our special teams were very good tonight," commented head coach Kelly Nobes post-game. "We saw contributions from all four lines and ended up playing some very composed hockey for all 60 minutes."
Tyler Townsend (Tavistock, Ont.), Nathan Peacock (Tillsonburg, Ont.), Jeff Borrows (London, Ont.), Colin Williams (Orangeville, Ont.) and Kelly Thomson (London, Ont.) scored the balance of the five purple-and-gold markers.
Ryerson's Donivan Munro (Toronto, Ont.) was the only scorer for the Rams. Laurier netminder Jeff MacDougald (Shallow Lake, Ont.) had an impressive performance stopping 25 shots on net.
Ryerson swapped goalies early in the second after Paul Gibson (St. Thomas, Ont.) gave up six goals on 15 shots within 22 minutes of play. Louie George (Waterloo, Ont.) relieved him for the balance of time stopping 27 of the Hawks' 31 shots.
Laurier next travels back to Toronto on Jan. 10 to face the Toronto Varsity Blues at 7:30 p.m. at Varsity Arena. The team returns to the Waterloo Recreation Complex on Jan. 15 to host the RMC Paladins at 7:30 p.m.

LONDON, Ont. – The Western Mustangs men's hockey team brought in the New Year with their first victory on home ice Wednesday night Jan. 7 at the newly revamped Thompson Recreation Athletic Centre. Just days following the grand opening of a $35-million dollar fitness and leisure facility adjacent to the ice pad, the purple and white were faced with a Far West Division challenge from the often underestimated Windsor Lancers (8-6-0-1).
Western has won both contests since returning from the Christmas break, defeating Brock and Toronto in road victories.
Windsor, however, didn't receive much of a break, as the team returned from New Orleans last week following a holiday spent with Habitat for Humanity in aid of Hurricane Katrina victims. The Lancers were faced with a daunting task in opening up their New Year against a surging Western team.
The 401 rivals kicked off the second of four meetings this season with a relatively cautious opening period. The pinnacle of the action through the first 20 minutes came in the dying moments as Windsor's Evan Weber (Simcoe, Ont.) left the penalty box and joined teammates Danny Anger (Woodslee, Ont.) and Josh Gaynor (Goderich, Ont.) on a 3-on-1, forcing Keyvan Hunt (Coquitlam, B.C.) to make a flashy glove save to keep the scoreboard dim.
Western came out with guns blazing in the second period, outshooting the gritty Lancers 19-9. Former Plymouth Whaler Joe McCann (Essex, Ont.) opened the scoring with his fifth of the season when the Windsor defensive coverage collapsed, allowing Jeff Martens (Maple Ridge, B.C.) to connect with McCann on a nice goalmouth pass.
Two teams with a history of chippy encounters were allowed to dish out some fierce hits along the boards and the officials put the whistles away, calling just six penalties throughout the game.
The third period would offer considerable action, as both teams opened up the floodgates offensively, generating opportunities and taking advantage of shooting lanes. Both netminders were put to the test but with Western carrying the majority of the offence as the game continued, Windsor goalie Jim Watt (Edmonton, Alta.) faced the lion's share of the work, turning away 38 of 40 shots on the evening.
Martens' scoresheet activity wasn't quite finished as a dribbler off the skate of a Windsor defender would beat Watt through the legs at 9:43 of the third.
The Lancers wouldn't go quietly as Scott Gillis (Antigonish, N.S.) countered at 15:43 for his sixth goal of the season.
Keyvan Hunt (Port Coquitlam, B.C.) sparkled in goal of the Mustangs, stopping 27 of the 28 shots he faced, with several highlight reel efforts. In his third game back in the line-up, Keaton Turkiewicz (Brantford, Ont.) showed flashes of offensive brilliance, with several rushes and quality chances.
Sean Courtney (Ennismore, Ont.) applied the final nail to the Windsor coffin with an empty net marker at twelve seconds remaining.
With the 3-1 victory, Western stretches their current winning streak to six games and with weaker opponents in Ryerson and RMC approaching on the schedule, the Mustangs can potentially expand on their string of success.
Western (11-5-0-1) travels to Ryerson (4-11-0-1) on Friday night for a date with the struggling Rams who suffered a 10-1 defeat at the hands of Laurier on Wednesday. The team returns home Jan. 16 when they play host to the RMC Paladins at 7:30 p.m.
