WATERLOO, Ont. - The No. 5 nationally-ranked Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks (13-2-1) handed the visiting York Lions (8-8-2) a 11-2 loss in front of 109 fans at the Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex.
York's Scott Restoule (Sudbury, Ont.) opened the scoring for the visiting team just two minutes into the game. The Lions speed and energy gave the team an advantage in the early parts of the period. Colin Williams (Orangeville, Ont.) sniped the corner of the net for the Golden Hawks second marker of the frame at the 13-minute mark. The period ended with the purple and gold holding an advantage on the scoreboard, but the visiting team held the lead in the shot count 15-10.
Laurier continued to carry their momentum into the second period and scored two goals from Jeff Borrows (London, Ont.) and newly-minted Hawk David Jarram (Kitchener, Ont.). York would put one more up on the board from Cassidy Preston (North Bay, Ont.), but then the Hawks would dominate the scoring for the remainder of the match. The final frame saw the Golden Hawks keep the Lions penned into their own zone for much of the period. Tyler Townsend (Tavistock, Ont.) scored just 1:30 into the period to keep the home teams scoring going. Team Captain Nick Vergeer (West Lorne, Ont.) scored followed by Jarram who potted his second of the game. Jean-Michel Rizk (Dunham, Que.) scored with about a minute remaining in the game and Clinton Pettapiece (Christina Lake, B.C.) notched his first regular season goal with just 17 seconds left in the game. All told, Laurier scored five goals in the period and seven unanswered.
York netminder David Davenport (Bradford, Ont.) saw 44 shots and made 33 saves for the loss while his counterpart Jeff MacDougald (Shallow Lake, Ont.) saw 41 shots and made 39 saves.
Minor infractions were kept to a minimum during the game with only nine called in total. Several players received 10 minute misconducts for some rough stuff towards the end of the third period.
