ST. CATHARINES, ON - The Brock University men's basketball team (9-2 OUA) rolled past the Guelph Gryphons by the score of 83-49 in front of a sold out crowd at the Bob Davis Gymnasium Wednesday night.
Prior to the game, Brock third year point guard Nolan Mackenzie (Oakville, ON) received the Jason Pearson Memorial Award. This award is presented annually to a member of the Brock Men's Basketball team. In addition to their athletic and academic ability, the recipient exhibits the same warmth of personality, concern for others and positive attitude for life as did Jason Pearson.
Jason was a two-sport athlete at Brock and instructor with the PALS Program. He played both basketball and volleyball who aspired to become a teacher back in his hometown of Guelph once he completed his studies. He attended Brock University from 1998 to 2001, majoring in Physical Education. In June 2001, Jason's life was tragically and suddenly taken from him, his family, and friends in a car accident.
Brock led by six points after one quarter 20-14. In the second quarter, Brock's offense erupted putting together a 21-4 run over an eight minute span, leading 43-24 at the half.
The Badgers led 68-37 after 30 minutes and put together a 12-0 run early in the final quarter leading by as many as 40 points, 80-40, on route to their 22nd victory of the season.
The Badgers had four starters in double figures led by Ryan Bennett (Toronto, ON) who led all scorers with 21 points and eight rebounds. Tyler Brown (Hamilton, ON) contributed with 16 points while Dani Elgadi (Waterloo, ON) added 15 points and 19 rebounds for the double double. Johneil Simpson (Toronto, ON) and Zachary Angelini (Hamilton, ON) rounded out the Brock leaders with 11 and nine points respectively.
Guelph was led by Drew Walford and Jack Beatty who added nine and eight points respectively.
The Badgers shot 40.8% (29-for-71) from the field, including 36.8% (7-for-19) from beyond the arc and 72.0% (18-for-25) from the charity stripe. The Gryphons were held to just 23.0% (17-for-74) from the floor and 4.8% (1-for-21) from long range. Brock also won the battle on the glass outrebounding Guelph by a 65-45 margin.
The Badgers return to action February 3rd at 8pm when they take on the No. 1 ranked Ryerson Rams on the road.

Warriors struggle to find hoop in loss to Mustangs
The Waterloo Warriors had a frustrating shooting night, hitting under 30% of shots, en route to a 65-46 loss to the visiting Western Mustangs on Wednesday night.
Waterloo scored the first basket of the game, a three by Dylan Phillips (Hamilton), but then went cold the rest of the quarter and were behind 22-10 after the opening period. Shooting just 21% to Western's 57% was the beginning of a long evening. Waterloo did improve their shooting and defense in the second, enjoyed a one point advantage in the second quarter, but trailed at half time 36-25.
The third quarter was much like the first in that Waterloo opened with a three, but then were out-scored 18-8 for the quarter. The Western lead was over 20 points and nothing was falling for Waterloo.
The fourth saw both teams struggle to close out the game. At one point both coaches wanted a timeout call when the other team scored, and nobody could score for over 2 minutes. There were 3 minutes left and still a 20 point margin.
Waterloo had only a single player in double figures, Dylan Phillips (Hamilton) with 10 points. Waterloo did out-rebound the Mustangs by a 39-32 margin led by Mike Pereira (Kitchener) with 16 rebounds. Pereira is second in the country with 12.3 rebounds per game.
Western was led by Anthony Spiridis with 22 points and Greg Morrow with 20.
Next game for Waterloo is Saturday afternoon as they travel to Windsor. Game time is 1:00pm and can be seen on oua.tv.
