Mustangs take down CIS No. 3 ranked Brock
ST. CATHARINES, Ont. – Twenty-five points from Peter Scholtes and 23 from Greg Morrow helped the Western Mustangs to a 72-61 victory over the CIS No. 3 Brock Badgers at the Bob Davis Gymnasium on Wednesday night.
The victory snaps the Mustangs four game losing streak, and improves their record to 4-6, good for third in the OUA West. The loss is Brock's second of the season, and leaves them tied for first in the OUA Central with the McMaster Marauders.
Schotles and Morrow led the Mustangs scoresheet with Anthony Spiridis following his teammates closely with 16 points of his own. The Morrow-Scholtes duo not only led the Mustangs offence but played a key role on the defensive side as well, grabbing seven rebounds apiece. Guard Tom Filgiano also had a successful game on the glass with six rebounds of his own.
The Badgers recorded three players with double digits in Wednesday's contest with Johneil Simpson leading with 19 points, followed by Ryan Bennett and Zachary Angelini with 14 and 12 respectively. Their defence was led by Dani Elgadi who grabbed eight and Matt Marshall who recorded seven rebounds.
Scholtes appeared on the Mustang scoresheet early, making aggressive plays to the basket to keep Western in front on the scoreboard. Scholtes fierce play allowed the Mustangs to make plays in the key and close out the first quarter up 19-15.
The Badgers started to catch up to the Mustangs speed in the second frame, trailing the Mustangs by no more than one possession for the majority of the frame. Spiridis led the purple and white offence in the second, tallying 10 of his 16 points in the quarter to help send Western into the half tied 28-28.
The purple and white momentum only increased in the next frame with the veteran Mustangs making aggressive plays to record points. Morrow, Spiridis, and Scholtes combined to score 20 of Western's 21 points in the frame and give the visitors a 49-41 lead heading into the final 10 minutes of play.
Brock began to slowly close the gap in the fourth, pulling to within three points midway through the final quarter. Leading 58-53, the Mustangs closed out the game with 14 points all coming off of free throws, including seven from Scholtes alone, to give the Mustangs a 72-61 win.
The Mustangs will look to continue their success this Saturday, January 23, when they take on the McMaster Marauder at the Burridge Gymnasium. Tip-off is at 3 p.m. and can be watched live on OUA.tv.

Marauders prove too much for Lancers
The McMaster men's basketball team got another career performance and handily defeated the Windsor Lancers 106-74 in Hamilton on Wednesday night.
Facing the team that eliminated them from the playoffs last season, the Marauders wasted no time in showing the Lancers that the drive back to Windsor would be a long one. Troy Joseph was on fire early and paced McMaster to a 15-6 lead. By the end of the opening quarter the lead had grown to 30-15 with McMaster in control.
The Lancers scored the first two hoops of the second stanza, looking like they might make a game of it. But Aaron Redpath started to heat up for McMaster, keying a 20-9 scoring surge, and by halftime the Maroon advantage was 55-32, as Redpath dropped in 17 over the opening 20 minutes.
Playing with the big lead saw the Marauders take the foot off the gas somewhat in the third quarter, but McMaster still won the period by six points to take a 28-point margin into the fourth quarter.
Windsor scored the opening five points of the final quarter, prompting McMaster Coach Amos Connolly to call timeout and remind his team the game was not over. The Marauders responded and outscored the Lancers 21-12 over the final nine minutes to close out the big win. Connolly was able to get all 12 players in uniform some playing time.
Redpath set a career scoring high with 27 points to lead the Marauders, while Joseph also had a solid game with 23 on the night. Leon Alexander just missed being the third Marauder to go over 20 as he finished with 19. Connor Gilmore with 11 and David McCulloch with 10 off the bench rounded out the double-digit scorers. Lancer Alex Campbell scored a game-high 28, and was a load for the Marauders for the entire game.
McMaster now improves to 8-2 in the OUA Central, and the team is riding a seven-game win streak. Next action is Saturday, January 23rd when the Western Mustangs come to Hamilton.
The game is part of the annual Marauder Weekend and will tip-off at 3-pm.
