The Gee-Gees men's basketball team finished up play at the Tournoi Rouge et Or des Fêtes with a 105-96 win over the UNB Varsity Reds, leading by 20 points multiple times throughout the contest. Tournament MVP Caleb Agada scored 17 points with eight rebounds and eight assists while fellow tournament all-star Mike L'Africain added 18 points and 8 assists.
As in the teams' October matchup, offence was the story. Ottawa held a 34-24 lead at the end of the first quarter which stretched to 59-48 at half time. The Gee-Gees continued to roll in the third quarter, knocking down an additional 27 points before slowing down in the fourth.
UNB was led by 27 points from Jesse Kendall while Javon Masters added 25. "We knew them and respect their ability to score," said Gee-Gees head coach James Derouin. "It was two good offensive teams and it was a bit of a show. We just had a little bit more firepower, and the guys down low made a big difference today."
Ottawa knocked down 17 three-pointers and shot 52 per cent from the floor while also winning the rebounding battle. Medhi Tihani added 15 points, Matt Plunkett 14 on 4-of-8 from long distance, and Brody Maracle notched 13 points.
"We will spend the next two weeks tightening up the defence to get ready for Carleton," added Derouin, whose troops will resume the regular season against the Ravens on January 16. The event, at Carleton's Ravens Nest, is sold out but will be webcast on OUA.tv.
