Quebec City's Mamadou Gueye (University of Alberta) showed his ability to finish athletic plays around the rim, and Canada shared the basketball effectively, registering 21 team assists. Gueye led all scorers with 23 points and nine rebounds.
Canada held a distinct size advantage at every position, and the Mongolians' speed could not make up for a 66-25 rebounding differential. The lead hit thirty points shortly after halftime.
Jared Ogungbemi-Jackson also had a strong game, bucketing 16 points with six assists. The Winnipeg, Man., native and Calgary Dino alumnus could be playing a big role for Canada going forward since two of Canada's starting guards have gone down with injuries. Johnny Berhanemeskel (Ottawa, Ont.) left today's game following a collision in which he drew a charge with 4:30 remaining in the first quarter, and Jahmal Jones has not dressed for the last two games.
"Jared's been getting better every day. You can never fault his work ethic and his team first attitude," said head coach Barnaby Craddock. "We want him to be a little bit more selfish sometimes and take his own shots because he's a dynamic scorer. He has a key role to play no matter what."
"We knew all twelve guys that were selected were going to contribute. When you have five pool games before the bracket round you need contributions from different guys on different nights. People are stepping up, and it's been a huge part of the success that we've had."
Canada will now shoot for a first place ranking in Pool B, and will need a victory over Russia (4-0) to enter the quarterfinals with a top seed. The two undefeated squads will meet at 3 p.m. (2 a.m. ET) on Thursday.
