Guelph 64 @ McMaster 89
It is said basketball is a game of runs, and the McMaster men's basketball team used more frequent and longer runs to defeat the visiting Guelph Gryphons 89-64 in OUA action on Wednesday night.
Early on it looked like Guelph's Zack Angus would be the next player to set a career high in the Burridge Gym as he drained two treys and a regular hoop to account for all the Gryphon scoring as the teams were tied 8-8 early. McMaster then went on a 10-2 run to lead 18-10, but before the opening quarter had ended Guelph had tied the game at 18-18 and it was only a Nate Pelech three-pointer at the buzzer that allowed Mac to hold a 21-18 lead.
McMaster opened the second quarter by scoring the first five baskets to boost the lead to 13. Guelph's top scoring threat Angus picked up his second personal foul and had to spend time on the Gryphon bench in the quarter. The Marauders maintained the advantage and held a 40-28 lead at halftime.
The third quarter saw McMaster go on its most damaging run of the game as it outscored the Gryphons 20-5 to start the period and took the game's biggest lead at 60-33. Guelph was able to trim the deficit before the end of the period, but still trailed 62-42 heading to the final quarter.
Behind some sweet shooting from Angus and Michel Clark, Guelph tried to make a run of its own in the fourth but could not get closer than 19 points. Another run by the Maroon pushed the score up to 76-50 midway through the fourth quarter and the teams cleared their benches as the clock ran down to a final 89-64 McMaster victory.
McMaster got 16 points from Taylor Black, 12 from Nathan McCarthy, and 11 from Trevon McNeil on what was a very balanced scoresheet. McCarthy nabbed BIG MAC player of the game honours as he grabbed 12 rebounds to register a double-double and added three blocks. Zack Angus scored a game high 17 for Guelph, and was the Gryphon player of the game.

Queen’s 73 @ York 55
The York University Lions men's basketball team dropped a tough battle Friday (Nov. 29), falling 73-55 to the Queen's Gaels on home court at the Tait McKenzie Centre.
Greg Faulkner (Kingston, Ont.) was on point throughout for Queen's, accumulating 21 points, seven rebounds, two steals, an assist and a block. Ryan Ejim (Brampton, Ont.) led the Lions with 15 points, eight rebounds three assists and two steals.
York looked strong to open the game, draining a quick three-point shot and jumping out to a 5-0 advantage. But a costly foul shifted momentum in the Gaels' direction, as they responded with a six-point run to snatch the lead. Trying to respond, the Lions instead looked careless with the ball and coughed up multiple untimely turnovers in the opposition's key. The first quarter would end with Queen's ahead 16-11.
It was the Gaels that opened the second quarter with a three-pointer, sprinting to a 21-11 advantage before York drained a basket. Chris Oppong (Toronto) entered the game immediately had a beautiful play, dribbling past a defender with an ankle-breaking move in the Queen's zone and dishing to Matthew Ziobrowski (Thornhill, Ont.) for the easy basket.
The spark ignited the crowd, and saw the Lions bring the score within two baskets, 25-21.
With two minutes remaining before half, York's Phillip Cunningham-Gillen (Hamilton, Ont.) drained a three pointer, evening the score for the first time as the Lions seemed to recapture some of the momentum back from the Gaels. But a couple of quick Queen's baskets had the Gaels in the lead once again, 34-30, going into halftime.
Another Queen's three-pointer signalled the beginning of the second half, as the team's perimeter shooting kept the Lions playing from behind.
With the Gaels clinging to a 42-37 tally, the two squads traded blocks back and forth as the defensive play of the game caused tensions to run high. Nick Tufegdzich (Tecumseh, Ont.) led that play for the Lions, accumulating three blocks and 12 rebounds while adding two of his 12 points in the game before time expired to make it 51-43 heading into the fourth.
The teams traded baskets in the early-going of the final frame, with Queen's retaining an eight point lead by the halfway point of the quarter. Faulkner continued to convert from the field, making it difficult for the Lions to gain any new ground, and deflating the energized crowd. Ultimately, York would slow down during the final stretch, and Queen's extended their lead to the eventual 18-point win.
The Lions won't return to action until the new year and will retake the court in Kingston, Ont., on Saturday, Jan. 4 to once again face the Queen's Gaels at 8pm.

Lakehead 71 @ Windsor 82
WINDSOR, Ont.- Josh Collins recorded a game-high 20 points, and the Windsor Lancers men's basketball team defeated the Lakehead Thunderwolves 82-71 on Friday night at the St. Denis Centre.
Enrico Diloreto added 16 points and nine rebounds, while Lien Phillip tallied 15 points and 14 rebounds for his fifth double-double of the season in helping the No. 8 Lancers (6-3) topple their bitter division rivals and hand Lakehead (2-7) their second-straight loss.
Henry Tan and Anthony McIntosh scored 19 and 18 points respectively in a losing cause for the Thunderwolves.
The teams traded points throughout the first minutes of the opening quarter. Rotimi Osuntola Jr. drained a three that gave the men a two-point lead, but the visitors responded with two of their own at the other end of the floor to draw even. Osuntola notched another corner three near the end of the opening stanza, and Diloreto dropped two free throws, giving the men a 19-17 lead after the first.
Diloreto started the second with a pretty finger-roll, and Collins followed that with a jumper from beyond the arc as the men went on a mini-run to take a seven point lead. Windsor quickly turned it into an explosive 14-2 streak to extend the spread into double-digits. Lakehead pulled within seven on a three-pointer by Jamar Coke, and the Lancers would eventually take a 38-33 lead into halftime.
Windsor shot just under 36% from the floor in the first half, while the Thunderwolves worked at a 44.1% efficiency. McIntosh led all players with 10 points in the opening half, while Collins and Diloreto tallied eight each for Windsor.
Osuntola capped another Lancer run to begin the second half with a long-ranger, forcing a timeout from the Thunderwolves who were looking to stem the Windsor momentum. After the visitors pulled within a few, Collins came up with another timely three. However, the Thunderwolves caught up and took over the lead in the final minute of the third. A clutch buzzer-beating three by Diloreto after a Thunderwolves fast-break lay-up cut the Lakehead lead to two heading into the final period.
The rivals traded baskets through the first few minutes of the fourth with Lakehead clinging to a one point lead. A jumper by Khalid Abdel-Gabar was followed by a fast-break lay-up by the Sheridan transfer, and the Lancers went ahead by three at the 5:55 mark. Abdel-Gabar and Diloreto then nailed back to back three's, and suddenly the home side held a nine-point advantage.
A couple of free throws by Phillip and another lay-up by Collins iced the contest minutes later, taking the wind out of Lakehead's sails. The Lancers shot 38.5% from the floor and outrebounded the Thunderwolves 45-40. The visitors worked at a 49.2% efficiency, but were held to just 12 points in the fourth quarter as Windsor's stingy, up-tempo defence helped preserve the win in the final 10 minutes.

McMaster 79 @ Western 49
LONDON, Ont. – The Western Mustangs men's basketball team matched up against the McMaster Marauders Saturday evening at Alumni Hall in a 79-49 loss, leaving the team with a record of 2-8 heading into the second half of the 2013-14 regular season.
Mustangs head coach Brad Campbell was quick to point out that the Mustang did not have any luck getting the ball into the basket as they scored only 30% of their shots from the floor.
"Our biggest weakness this game was putting the ball in the basket. I mean, McMaster's defence is good, but we also had a lot of easy opportunities that we just didn't cash in on. We missed a bunch of open layups, three-pointers and shots, which put a lot of stress on our defence," said Campbell.
The Mustangs came out with a steady half-court offence in the first quarter, feeding the ball inside to Peter Scholtes who posted eight points, followed by Eric McDonald who added another six. By the second quarter, McMaster began to up the tempo of the game with a strong defensive strategy, scoring 42 points and holding the Mustangs to only 26 points.
McMaster continued their defensive pressure right into the third quarter, allowing Western to score only five points in the first eight minutes. The Mustangs also had difficulty shooting against the defensive pressure of the Marauders scoring only 28%, while McMaster did not once give up the lead, outscoring Western 15-11 in the final frame resulting in a 79-49 loss for the Mustangs.
Rashayne Case and Quinn Henderson led the team in scoring with 10 points apiece, followed by Greg Morrow and Peter Scholtes who both scored nine points on the night.
Campbell will be looking forward to the holiday break as the Mustangs will take time off to refresh and come out strong in the second half of the season.
"We get to regroup a little bit. We'll take next week off and just have some meetings and then start our December practice period after exams which will give us a chance to recharge the battery."
After the break the Mustangs will play a pair of exhibition contests against Rochester College on December 30 and 31 before resuming their regular season schedule against the Guelph Gryphons on Wednesday, January 8. Game time is set for 8:00 p.m. in Guelph.

Lakehead 80 @ Windsor 71
WINDSOR, Ont.- The Windsor Lancers men's basketball team had their four-game winning streak snapped on Saturday evening at the St. Denis Centre, falling 80-71 to the Lakehead Thunderwolves in the second consecutive match-up between the division rivals.
Josh Collins topped the CIS No. 8 ranked Lancers (6-4) with 19 points and six assists, and Lien Phillip notched 16 points and a game-best 13 rebounds. Enrico Diloreto added 15 points, while Henry Tan garnered a contest-high 25 for the visitors in helping Lakehead (3-7) end a two-game slide.
The Thunderwolves jumped out to an early lead midway through the first, as Tan nailed a three and ensuing fast-break lay-up to put Lakehead up 15-7. The Thunderwolves were able to extent the lead to 13 by the end of the first, as they shot over 60% from the floor in the opening ten minutes.
The visitors then started the second on an 11-3 run to quickly spread the lead to 22. However, Phillip dropped eight points through the first 15 minutes to help Windsor keep pace, and Diloreto tried to stem the Thunderwolves momentum with two straight lay-ups. Coming out of a timeout, the London, Ont. native forced a Lakehead turnover and laid the ball off to Collins for another Windsor bucket, as the home side went on an 8-0 run.
Collins then picked up a lay-up driving to the basket, converting on the ensuing free throw, and a three-pointer from Diloreto cut the Thunderwolves advantage to 11. The Lancers used a strong final few minutes of the second to pull within 14 going into the locker rooms.
Tan led the first half with 13 points, while Diloreto grabbed nine to top the Lancers. Lakehead shot 53% through two quarters of play, while Windsor was 32% in the first half.
Evan Matthews attempted to keep the Windsor tide moving to begin the second half, using some nice work in the low post to rack up six points underneath the basket. A running lay-in from Collins brought the men within 11, and a big three by the Toronto native cut the deficit back to single-digits. But the men faced a 12-point hill to climb after three quarters of play after Lakehead was able to retain some of those points in the latter stages of the third.
Diloreto nailed a jumper to begin the fourth, and a lay-in from Phillip kept the men within striking distance. However, Tan got hot once again, dropping three jumpers from beyond the arc in the middle portion of the final quarter, and Lakehead regained a double-digit advantage going into the final minutes of the contest. Windsor's comeback bid would fall short, as they lost their first match on home court this season.
Windsor finished the game shooting 37.5% from the floor, while Lakehead shot 50% from the field. Windsor out-rebounded Lakehead 44-36, and both teams turned the ball over on 18 occasions.
