MEN'S BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Thunderbirds grab first OUA win
Lakehead 79 @ York 73
The York University Lions men's basketball team lost a tough, defensive game Saturday night (Nov. 2) by a score of 79-73 to the Lakehead Thunderwolves at the Tait McKenzie Centre.
The loss is the first for the Lions on the young season, having won their season opener against the Guelph Gryphons a night prior.
Despite the defeat, there were four different players that reached double digits in scoring for the Lions, with Richard Iheadindu (Brampton, Ont.) and Nathan Culbreath (Kingston, Ont.) both having 13 points, Ryan Ejim (Brampton, Ont.) adding 12 points and eight rebounds, and Daniel Tulloch (Mississauga, Ont.) contributed 10 points, four rebounds and two blocked shots.
For Lakehead, Anthony McIntosh (Ottawa) had a stellar night, leading all players with 21 points and seven rebounds, while teammate Dwayne Harvey (Hamilton, Ont.) had 16 points, five rebounds and four steals on the way to the win.
The first quarter would tip off in front of a packed house as the Lions jumped out to a quick four-point lead to energize the home crowd. But Lakehead would utilize a fast-paced transition game to force a couple of early fouls against York, shifting the momentum. Capitalizing on the Lions missteps, the Thunderwolves overtook the lead in the first, claiming an 18-10 advantage after one.
The Lions needed to slow Lakehead's attack, but would instead be outscored 10-5 to start the second, going down 28-15 with five minutes left before intermission.
Looking to adapt, York started to force Lakehead to the outside on the rush, producing more perimeter shots and rebounds. The Thunderwolves began to miss their target, and the Lions were able to reduce the deficit to 32-21 by half.
The Lions continued to focus on defending the key and forcing tough perimeter shots in the third, while offensively, they began to drive the lane down low for success, catapulting themselves to within four points of the Thunderwolves. That narrow deficit was short-lived, however, as the Thunderwolves again started controlling the paint and pushed the lead further.
Deep in the third, Culbreath, energized his team by breaking the ankles of a Lakehead defender with a beautiful one-on-one move on his way to the basket for the score and a foul, making it a three-point play.
However, the Lions still trailed 52-39 entering the final quarter, but momentum was on their side and they used that to begin cutting into the deficit in the fourth. They managed to outscore the Thunderwolves 15-10 in the final frame but Lakehead was able to withstand the surge and hold on for the win.
The Lions will be set on returning to victory when they travel to Windsor, Ont., to face the Lancers at 8pm next Friday (Nov. 8). The game will be the first of four on the road before they return home to the Tait McKenzie Centre to host the Brock Badgers on Friday, Nov. 22 at 8pm.

Guelph 64 @ Queen's 88
KINGSTON, Ont. (November 2, 2013) - The Queen's men's basketball team was relentless from the tip-off with a commanding victory 88-64 over the Guelph Gryphons on Saturday night, in Kingston Ontario.
The Gaels got off to an early lead against the Gryphons, leading an astounding 24-2 at the end of the first quarter. At the half, Roshane Roberts (Vaughan, Ont.) and Greg Faulkner (Kingston, Ont.) were the main offensive contributors helping the Gaels to a 51-20 lead.
The third quarter went much like the first two. A dunk by Faulker early in third took their lead to 61-21. After that, the game started to get a bit sloppy with Guelph trying to climb back and the Gaels trying to maintain focus. Guelph started to rally back in the fourth outscoring the Gaels 25-17. Trevor Thompson and Zachary Angus of Guelph led the Gryphons offensively in the fourth, but they were unable to hold back the Gaels who went 8 of 17 from behind the arc and shot 47% from the floor for the game.
Faulkner recorded a double-double with 23 points and 11 rebounds while Roberts finished with 11 points and Mackenzie Simpson (Ottawa) added 10 points and eight rebounds. This is the second win for the Gaels this weekend, giving them a regular season record of 2-0.
The men take on the Western Mustangs next Friday at 8pm in their first road game of the season.

Western 42 @ Carleton 117
The Carleton Ravens made it two wins in a row on Saturday night with an offensive outpouring as they knocked of the Western Mustangs 117-42.
Seven different Ravens’ player hit double digits including Clinton Springer- Williams (London, ON) who led Carleton with 17 points in 20 minutes of play.
“I thought it was a solid team effort against Western,” Springer-Williams said.
“Everybody played well including the freshmen which is very nice to see.”
In the fourth quarter, the Ravens limited the Mustangs to just 6 points so the defensive side of the squad was working as well.
“We (Carleton) have to be better defensively,” said Dave Smart, Ravens head coach. “I thought that last night against Windsor and tonight versus Western we were a little better defensively."
Now the Ravens hit the road for their next four games which will be spread out over two weekends.
“It’s always tough to win in the OUA West because there’s lot of travel involved,” Smart said.
On Friday, November 8th, the Ravens will travel to Thunder Bay, Ontario to take on Lakehead. On Saturday, November 9 Carleton will be at Guelph.
The Ravens will play at McMaster on November 15 then finish up at Brock on November 16.
The Ravens next home game will take place on Saturday, November 22 when Wilfred Laurier visits the Ravens’ Nest.

Windsor 85 @ Ottawa 96
It was a tight battle between two highly talented teams on Saturday night, but in the end uOttawa was the team that prevailed taking a 96-85 victory at home. The win brings their record 2-0 on the season and 10-0, with pre-season factored in.
Johnny Berhanemeskel became the Gee-Gees' top all-time shooter from long range on Saturday night, breaking the previous record of 199 made three-pointers set by Alex McLeod who played for uOttawa from 2002-07. The historic shot came from a foot off of the three-point line as he pulled up and launched a shot over his defender, Josh Collins. The guard finished with a game high 34 points and six rebounds, including five treys to establish the new uOttawa record at 200 regular season three-pointers.
“It was good to get this record out of the way now rather than later into the season. I love games like this, it’s good for our guys because with the intensity of these games a mistake seems even worse than it is so it’s great for the learning curb,” commented Berhanemeskel. “They didn’t make it easy for us. It was a grind and they are a great team but thankfully we were able to squeeze this victory out.”
After holding a ten point lead for the majority of the first half, the Gee-Gees were flat in the third quarter which allowed Windsor to get back into the game. However, the turning point of the game came when Vikas Gill and Caleb Agada hit back-to-back three pointers to open the final frame. uOttawa outscored the Lancers 31-19 in the final quarter and took the hard fought victory.
“I thought we were a little bit flat out of the third quarter but I also think Windsor is just a great team. They came out and made some big shots during that stretch but thankfully we handled it and moved on,” said head coach James Derouin. “Our gang rebounded very well tonight and that’s what we wanted. They are such a big team so it was really nice to see everybody get after it on the boards.”
Windsor's Enrico Diloreto put in a solid effort for the Lancers, scoring 29 points of which 17 came in the first half. Josh Collins also chipped in with four three-pointers and 20 points.
Second-year Caleb Agada dazzled once again as he had the entire house on its feet in the first quarter when he completed two consecutive rim-rattling dunks in transition. The highlight of the night worthy dunks gave uOttawa a much needed boost, keying a 14-2 run.
The forward posted 27 points, six rebounds and four steals. The point total sets a new career high for Agada, topping the 18 which was set on Friday night versus Western.
Ottawa was able to carry the lead all the way into the half time break as they took a 47-40 lead into the locker room.
The Gee-Gees will take to the road next weekend where they will face the University of Guelph on Friday night followed by a matchup with Lakehead University on Saturday.

Toronto 93 @ Brock 85
ST.CATHARINES, Ont. – The Brock University men's basketball team (0-2 OUA) fell by the score of 93-85 to the Toronto Varsity Blues (1-1 OUA) Saturday night in the Bob Davis Gymnasium.
Brock got off to a slow start in the first quarter trailing 9-2 early and finding themselves down 19-10 heading into the second.
It was more of the same story in the second frame with Toronto outscoring the Badgers by the score of 21-16 to trail 40-28 at halftime.
Whenever the momentum seemed to change in Brock's direction the Varsity Blues would answer with a big three-pointer or a bucket plus a foul to end the Badgers threat.
A late rally from Brock got them to within six but it was too little too late as the Varsity Blues put the game away to take the 93-85 win.
Tshing Kasamba and Brandon John led the Badgers on offense finishing with 19 points apiece. Dani Elgadi and Jay Fast had 16 and 12 points respectively to round out the top scorers for Brock.
Alex Hill took the game in his own hands by putting up 35 points on his own to go with seven rebounds and five assists. Hill was almost perfect from the free-throw line going 14 for 15. Devin Johnson added 19 points and nine rebounds for the Varsity Blues.
Brock struggled to find the hoop shooting 38.6% (32-83) from the field including just 25.0% (6-24) from beyond the arc. They did excel at the charity stripe going 15 for 18 (83.3%).
The Varsity Blues shot 43.5% (30-69) from the field, 31.6% from downtown, and 77.1% (27-35) from the free-throw line.
Brock will look to get into the win column next weekend when they take to the road for a pair of games beginning with Algoma on Friday November 8th before heading to Laurentian for a matchup with the Voyageurs on Saturday.

Ryerson 64 @ McMaster 74
The McMaster men's basketball team knew it faced a tough challenge from the No. 4 ranked Ryerson Rams but came up with a huge effort to thrill the Burridge Gym faithful and secure a 74-64 victory in OUA interlock play.
Playing without injured post Nathan McCarthy, Coach Amos Connolly went to a smaller line-up with Leon Alexander moving to a post spot and Joe Rocca starting on the wing. It was an inspired decision as both Alexander and Rocca played key roles in the victory.
The teams wasted no time in getting the intensity level cranked up and with Rocca and Aaron Redpath hitting early treys, McMaster was able to grab an 8-2 lead. The Rams fought back to close the gap, and it was only a long three-pointer by Nate Pelech at the end of the first quarter that allowed McMaster to lead 21-18. The Marauders had played most of the period without Taylor Black, who went to the bench with two early fouls, and stayed there for the rest of the half.
Some fireworks erupted in the second quarter as Leon Alexander posed a match-up problem for Ryerson because of his speed and slashing ability. With McMaster leading 31-23, Ryerson's Yannick Walcott was called for a flagrant foul on Alexander and ejected from the game. However, the ejection seemed to focus the Rams who rallied to finish the quarter strongly and McMaster's lead was just 34-33 at intermission.
Ryerson started the third looking to grab some momentum and took the lead 55-52. That's when Adam Presutti hit two three-point shots to put McMaster back in front, and with contributions coming from Black, Alexander and Trevon McNeil, the Maroon lead grew to 53-46 after three quarters.
The fourth quarter belonged to Mac's Joe Rocca, who got in a zone and seemed to score every time Ryerson tried to make a run. Rocca scored seven straight points midway through the final stanza to keep the Marauder lead intact. He got some help in the period as Presutti and Black also hit clutch treys in the fourth and time ran out on the Rams.
Rocca was the top shooter for McMaster with 22 points on 9 of 14 shooting. Presutti drained five three-pointers on the night to add 15, while Black with 12 and Alexander with 11 also hit double figures. Ryerson was led by Jahmal Jones who scored 18, while Kadeem Green chipped in14.
Ryerson won the battle of the boards with 36 rebounds to McMaster's 33.

Algoma 61 @ Waterloo 55
The Algoma Thunderbirds picked up their first ever OUA win on Saturday night defeating the Warriors 61-55 at the PAC.
The T-Birds used a quick start outscoring Waterloo 17-7 in the opening quarter to earn the win. With the win Algoma opened up the season at 1-1 while the Warriors went 0-2.
Algoma shot a lowly 33.9% from the field while Waterloo didn't fare much better at 38.6% but the difference for the visitors was their work from the free throw line. The Warriors sent Algoma to the line 26 times with the T-Birds draining 16 of those attempts.
Reynaldo Carnakie led all scorers with 16 points for Algoma with four from the field and eight free throws. Sean Clendinning and Terrell Campbell also led the Algoma attack with 13 and 12 points respectively.
For Waterloo it was rookie point guard Myles Charvis (Mississagua) leading the way with 14 points going 6-for-14 from the field. Veteran guard Wayne Bridge (North York/Eastern Commerce) put up 13 points in the game while Jaspreet Gill (Oliver) had 12.

Up by four points after three quarters of play, Laurier managed just nine points in the final frame while the Voyageurs scored 20 of their own to come away with the win.
Nelson Yengue of Yaounde, Cameroon, was a key performer for the Voyageurs as the third year guard had a double-double of 26 points and 10 rebounds. Teammates Alex Ratte of Ottawa, and Josh Budd of Timmins, Ont., each chipped in with 16 points.

The third quarter progressed as the second had, with neither team able to shake the other. The Lions pulled ahead slightly over the Gryphons, taking it 27-22 to hold a five-point advantage going into the fourth.
The Gryphons continued to chip away at the lead in the final quarter and managed to tie the game at 92-all late, but the Lions benefitted from some clutch shooting down the stretch to once again take the lead, and held on down the stretch.
Both Ryan Ejim (Brampton, Ont.) and Nathan Culbreath (Kingston, Ont.) had tremendous debut games with the Lions. Ejim, a transfer from Humber College, led all Lions with 21 points on 10-of-17 shooting and also added three rebounds, two assists, two steals and four blocks. Windsor 74 @ Carleton 95
The Carleton Ravens began their quest for another CIS title on Friday night with a convincing 95-74 win over the visiting Windsor Lancers.
It was a clash of two top ten CIS teams at the Ravens Nest with Carleton ranked No. 1 and Windsor in sixth spot but the home team was clearly the better squad.
The Ravens probably remembered last season’s opening night matchup against Windsor when the Lancers handed Carleton their only loss of 2012-2013 coming away with a 71-67 win at the St. Denis Centre.
“I thought we (Carleton) rebounded well, we did a good job on the defensive boards which helped to control their offence, “said Ravens head coach, Dave Smart.
The Ravens controlled the backboards and the scoreboard as they held a 42-27 halftime lead and were up by 21 points, 70-51 after three quarters.
Philip Scrubb (Richmond, B.C.) was his usual self with 24 points and finished the night delivering an incredible 15 for 15 from the free throw line.
Brother Tommy had an 18 point night and hauled in 7 rebounds.
“I thought we played OK but our defence wasn’t great,” Tommy Scrubb admitted. “Their best players did whatever they wanted to, it’s definitely something we are going to have to work on.”
Kevin Churchill (Toronto, ON) contributed 19 points, 4 rebounds, 2 steals and was a stellar 7for 7 on free throws.
Carleton is back in action on Saturday night, November 2 when Western comes to town. Game time at the Ravens Nest is 8:00PM.

Western 76 @ Ottawa 104
After a red hot pre-season, the uOttawa Gee-Gees men’s basketball team continued the heat as they opened their regular season with a big 104-76 win over the Western Mustangs. Johnny Berhanemeskel led the way in scoring for the garnet and grey, posting 21 points and three assists.
uOttawa ran away with the victory early in the game and never looked back. Despite putting up their best effort the Mustangs were unable to keep up with the Gee-Gees as they committed 24 turnovers in the game. Ottawa maintained its identity as a deadly team from the three-point line by hitting 11 treys and shooting 42.3 per cent from long range.
Caleb Agada had a strong performance as he chipped in offensively with 18 points and six rebounds. In his first regular season game in a starting role the forward appeared to be the full package as he was relentless on defence, he hit clutch three-pointers, and added some highflying dunks.
“I didn’t exactly play the way I wanted to at the start of the game. I still have areas I need to work on,” said Agada. “We obviously want to get back to the national championship again this year. It’s really early to be talking about that but we definitely got the start to the season that we wanted. We are already looking ahead to tomorrow night. It’s going to great challenge for us and we are ready for it.”
“I thought we did some really good things tonight. I get frustrated sometimes with our defence but we were a lot better in that department by the third quarter and I thought that was the difference in the game. I think overall we still have long ways to go in that area,” said head coach James Derouin. “We know Windsor really well and we know they are a really good team. We are playing a much bigger team so we have to clean up the glass of we are going to be in for a long night.”
The intensity of the game was high right away on Friday night as a routine play quickly escalated and resulted in a pile up in front of the Gee-Gees bench.
Western’s Anthony Spiridis was assessed a unsportsmanlike foul on the play. The altercation only seemed to fuel the Gee-Gees as they responded with an 11-4 offensive run. Johnny Berhanemeskel appeared to be in mid-season form as he posted 10 points in the first quarter while hitting a spectacular three-point shot after crossing up his defender.
The Gee-Gees were able to jump ahead before the halftime break as they went on run which was highlighted swift passing and strong finishes at the basket. They took a commanding 55-37 lead into the break.
The Gee-Gees will be facing an even tougher test tomorrow night when they welcome Lien Phillip and the no.7 Windsor Lancers to Montpetit Hall.

Toronto 75 @ McMaster 96
The McMaster men's basketball team got a balanced team effort, and a monster performance from forward Taylor Black, and defeated the Toronto Varsity Blues 96-75 in the OUA opener for both teams.
The Marauders started the game strong and got after the Blues right away at both ends. Offensively, the Maroon were hot from beyond the arc with Aaron Redpath, Joe Rocca and Adam Presutti hitting from long range. Toronto showed they have some weapons though and it looked like a shootout was going to unfold as McMaster ended the first quarter leading 27-22.
The second quarter saw both teams try to make an extended run, but after Toronto closed to within four at 35-31, McMaster started to increase its advantage. By the intermission, the score favoured the Maroon 46-37.
The third quarter was noteworthy for two reasons. The first was that Taylor Black started to dominate, scoring inside and outside. The second was that Rohan Boney gave the team a tremendous jolt of energy at both ends of the floor,
hammering a dunk in transition and making an enormous rejection on defense. With the Mac shooters looking confident, the lead grew to 74-55 after three quarters.
Even with the comfortable margin, the Marauders played hard and won the fourth quarter 22-20, sweeping all four periods from the Blues. Aaron Redpath, Nate Pelech and Trevon McNeil all hit big shots and Coach Connolly was able to get his entire team into the game.
Taylor Black just missed a double-double with 28 points and nine boards. He shot 11 for 17 from the floor, including two of three from beyond the arc. Other double digit scorers were Rocca with 16, Redpath with 11, and Leon Alexander who scored 10 points on a perfect five for five shooting effort. Toronto had five players in double-figure scoring, led by Dakota Laurin with 16 and Devin Johnson with 15.
McMaster dominated the battle of the boards with 49 rebounds, including 26 off the offensive glass, while Toronto grabbed 23.
McMaster will face the Ryerson Rams on Saturday, November 2 in the Burridge Gym at 8-pm as the second half of an OUA basketball doubleheader. The Ryerson men will be a tough challenge as they were ranked No. 4 in the first CIS top-ten of the new season.
