CIS MEN'S BASKETBALL FINAL 8: Carleton proves to be too much for McMaster

Â
Carleton, the reigning three-time champion, will now face the No. 3 Alberta Golden Bears in the early semifinal at 6 p.m. on Saturday at the Canadian Tire Centre, live on Sportsnet 360.
Â
The Ravens rode a combined 41-point performance by the brothers Scrubb (Philip and Tommy) along with 13 points from Kevin Churchill and 12 from Tyson Hinz.
Â
Carleton took the lead from the opening tip-off against their OUA west counterparts and never looked back outscoring their opposition in all four quarters.
Â
“We (Carleton) did some good things offensively against Mac but I feel that we got some breaks when they missed some looks and shots,” said Ravens head coach, Dave Smart.
Â
“Our defence did a little better job getting out of their comfort zone and not letting Mac get in the paint. But we still have guys that are taking short cuts and being taken advantage of.”Â
Â
The Ravens held a 43-35 lead at halftime then went on to outscore McMaster 20-15 in the third frame. The Marauders battled hard throughout however and were only down 51-48 late in the third.
Â
The fourth quarter featured Carleton’s largest lead of the game with a 20-point margin at the 7:09 mark.
Â
Leon Alexander was the Marauders leading scorer with 14 points and 5 rebounds. Aaron Redpath chipped in with 10.
Â
“We (McMaster) gave them a war for a little bit and this is something that we can build on as a program,” said Marauders coach, Amos Connolly. Â
Â
“Not a single player on this team has been to a national championship before. I'm not attributing the loss to that but it’s understandable that they may have been a bit frozen.”
Â
Playing against Carleton on any night is never an easy task, no less in the national spotlight so the Marauders were in tough against Carleton especially it was the Ravens first game after losing in last week’s OUA championship.
Â
“Our game plan coming in against Carleton was that we didn't want everyone else to hurt us. We figured Tyson (Hinz) and Phil (Scrubb) were probably going to hurt us but didn’t foresee Thomas (Scrubb) putting up 20 against us.”
Â
With the loss, McMaster will play against the No. 6 Saint Mary’s Huskies on Saturday afternoon in a consolation match beginning at 12:30 p.m.
