OUA names 2014 men's basketball East division all-stars
Â
The defending national champions Carleton Ravens boast three athletes on the OUA East first team that also features a pair of electric guards; one from the Ottawa Gee-Gees and one from the Ryerson Rams.
Â
Philip Scrubb of Richmond, B.C. gets his third straight OUA first team nod. The fourth-year guard led the No. 1 Ravens in scoring, pouring in 18.6 points per game while shooting 49.2 percent from the field and 46.9 percent from beyond the arc. Scrubb also dished out 4.9 assists per contest, demonstrating the well-rounded game that has made him a two-time CIS player of the year.
Â
Ottawa Gee-Gees sharpshooter Johnny Berhanemeskel (Ottawa) also receives first team status for the third year in a row. The fourth-year guard led the nation’s highest scoring offence in points this season. His 451 points set the school record, and averaged out to 20.5 points per game for the Gee-Gees Berhanemeskel shot a blistering 53.1 percent from the field this year; a career-high.
Â
Tyson Hinz of the Carleton Ravens is a perennial OUA East all-star. A former CIS player of the year, Hinz becomes a first-teamer for the fourth time this year. The fifth-year forward is a force on both ends of the floor, contributing 14.6 points and 5.9 rebounds per game for the top-ranked Ravens. Hinz averaged 25 minutes a game this season for Carleton, a team that averaged 94.2 points per game despite having only two players in the top 20 in OUA scoring.
Â
Hinz wraps up his regular season career as one of the most decorated basketball players in Ontario University Athletics history. The Ottawa native is a four-time OUA first team all-star, three-time CIS first team all-Canadian, former OUA all-rookie team member, three-time OUA champion, four-time CIS champion and has been named the Most Valuable Player at the National Championship once.
Â
Thomas Scrubb completes the trio of Carleton Ravens on the OUA East first team. Scrubb is the defensive stalwart of the Ravens team, being named OUA East defensive player of the year last year. With Scrubb taking the lead on defence, the Ravens allowed a CIS low 62.2 points per game, 16 points better than the closest rival. The Richmond, B.C. native also chipped in 13.2 points and 8.4 rebounds per game this season.
Â
Rounding out the first team is Ryerson Rams guard Jahmal Jones. Jones (Mississauga, Ont.) averaged 19.1 points per game, which was seventh in the OUA. In addition to his scoring touch, Jones was the top ball distributor in the East, dishing out 5.0 assists per contest. The fourth-year guard moved into second on Ryerson's all-time scoring list with 1,446 career points. Jones was an important piece to the success of the Rams this season, helping them to a 16-6 record and spending the entire season in the CIS top ten, peaking at four but finishing the year No. 8. This marks the third time Jones has been named to the OUA East first team.
Â
The second team features a trio of first-time OUA all-stars and two previous honourees. Alex Ratte of the Laurentian Voyageurs and Greg Faulkner of the Queen’s Gaels are second teamers for the second consecutive year, while York’s Nick Tufegdzich, Ryerson’s Adika Peter-McNeilly and Ottawa’s Terry Thomas earn their first OUA all-star awards.
Â
Ratte, a third-year guard from Ottawa, was second in the OUA in scoring, averaging 24.4 points per game for the Voyageurs. He also chipped in 5.1 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game for Laurentian, who finished the regular season in fourth place in the East with a 12-10 record.
Â
Faulkner was the top scorer for the Gaels, pouring in 16.0 points per game this season. The fourth-year guard from Kingston, Ont. shot 46.2 percent from the field in helping Queen’s to a ten-win regular season and a playoff berth. Faulkner has been a second teamer in each of the two years since he transferred to his hometown Gaels.
Â
In his fourth year with the York Lions, Nick Tufegdzich becomes an OUA all-star for the first time this year. The native of Tecumseh, Ont. was the only OUA East player to average a double-double for the season, totaling 14.0 points and 10.4 rebounds per game for the Lions. The six-foot-seven forward also led the OUA in blocks, swatting an average of 2.0 shots per game.
Â
Terry Thomas of the Ottawa Gee-Gees becomes an East second team all-star in his first OUA season, after transferring from St. Francis Xavier of Atlantic University Sport. The Dartmouth, N.S native was dominant in averaging 22.4 points per game over 14 contests for the high scoring Gee-Gees.
Â
Ryerson’s Adika Peter-McNeilly (Scarborough, Ont.) burst onto the scene this season. In his first year in the OUA after playing one season in junior college in the U.S., the six-foot-three shooting guard contributed 10.3 points per game for the Rams while shooting 47.8 percent from the field on 138 attempts.
Â
The OUA East all-rookie team demonstrates the up and coming talent in the OUA. This year’s all-rookie squad is made up of Jean-Victor Mukama (Hamilton, Ont.) of the Ryerson Rams, Laurentian’s Gherick Uneau (Ste. Rose, Guadaloupe), York Lions teammates Nathan Culbreath (Kingston, Ont.) and Phillip Cunningham-Gillen (Hamilton, Ont.), and Nick Burke (Hamilton, Ont.) of the Toronto Varsity Blues. A young and talented group, this all-rookie team represents the future of OUA men’s basketball.
