MEN'S BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Windsor downs Western in a rare Tuesday matchup
Western 58 @ Windsor 73
WINDSOR, Ont.- The Windsor Lancers men's basketball team used a balanced attack to topple the visiting Western Mustangs 73-58 on Senior's Night at the St. Denis Centre Tuesday evening.
No. 5 Windsor (15-5) had 10 of its 11 dressed athletes notch five or more points on the evening, helping the men move within one game of the No. 7 McMaster Marauders (16-4), who lead the OUA West division. The Lancers also increased their current winning streak to eight games with the victory, and will look to extend that run into double-digits with two more conference games remaining this week before the start of the playoffs.
Windsor's leading scorer Enrico Diloreto tied a game-high with 12 points, while Rotimi Osuntola Jr. and Mike Rocca each added 10 for the home side, who ended their regular season at the St. Denis Centre with an impressive 11-1 mark. Lien Phillip notched a team-high eight rebounds and picked up five points. Eric McDonald led the Mustangs with 12 of his own, with Greg Morrow and Cameron Morris each totalling 11 and 10 points respectively in a losing cause. Western (8-12) dropped to 4-7 on the road and are currently fourth in the OUA West.
Following the contest, Windsor honoured three of the program's most decorated athletes, as fifth-years Phillip, Diloreto and Josh Collins were all recognized for their outstanding contributions on the court and in the community. Phillip, last year's OUA West player of the year and CIS all-Canadian, is having another MVP-like season in his final campaign, ranking first in the nation with 12.9 rebounds per game. Diloreto became the men's program's all-time career points leader two weekends ago, while teammate Collins took over the all-time career assists lead on that same weekend. Both have been given OUA all-star nods during the illustrious careers.
The men will wrap up their conference play on Wednesday evening in Waterloo and Saturday afternoon at Brock. Windsor, who has already earned a bye through the first round of the playoffs, will then host an OUA quarter-final match-up next weekend with a ticket to the Wilson Cup Final Four on the line. The 2014 Wilson Cup, presented by Recharge with Milk, is taking place at Ryerson University's Mattamy Athletic Centre for a second straight year from February 28 to March 1.
