OUA By The Numbers
30 – Combined points by the Waterloo men’s hockey dynamic duo of Justin Larson and Colin Behenna over the past seven games. In that span, Behenna has notched three goals and 11 assists. Not to be outdone, Larson has put up six tallies and 10 helpers of his own. In the seven-game stretch, dating back to November 29, 2013, Larson and Behenna are averaging 4.3 points per contest.
11 – OUA teams featured in the first CIS men’s and women’s track and field rankings of the season, released Tuesday. Ontario schools hold the top ranking on both sides. For the women, five schools are represented with Guelph holding onto the top ranking followed by Western at No. 3, Toronto at No. 5, Windsor at No. 7 and York at No. 9. For the men, the Lancers sit at the top with York, Guelph, Toronto and Western holding down second through fifth respectively, and Ottawa at No. 9.
52- Points scored by York men’s basketball player Daniel Tulloch in a pair of games over the weekend. In back-to-back contests, the second-year forward counted 24 and 28 points in road games at Algoma and Laurentian. Tulloch also added 16 rebounds on the weekend. He is currently averaging 17.3 points per game for the Lions; good enough for 10th in the OUA. For his outstanding weekend, Tulloch was named the Pioneer Energy male athlete of the week.
7 – Points collected last week by Pioneer Energy female athlete of the week, Jessica Fickel. The fourth-year Brock University forward accounted for five goals, including two shorthanded markers, plus two assists in a pair of Badger victories. Fickel was on fire in an 8-1 win over Nipissing, lighting the lamp three times in the second period and adding a helper. She followed that up with two more goals and an assist in a 4-0 win over Laurentian. Thanks to Fickel’s strong play, the Badgers are in the midst of a five-game winning streak and sit just three points out of the final playoff spot in the OUA.
0 – Losses for first-place McMaster Marauders men’s volleyball team. The defending OUA champs have opened the season 14-0 and have dropped just seven sets en route to the top ranking in the CIS. With six matches remaining, McMaster looks poised to make a run at a second-straight championship but will have to hold off other talented teams like Western and Waterloo, who are tied for second at 11-3. The Marauders will visit Waterloo on Friday to take on the Warriors at 8 p.m.
6,604 – Fans in attendance for the Capital Hoops Classic. The annual basketball contest between the Carleton Ravens and Ottawa Gee-Gees men’s and women’s teams was played on Tuesday, January 21 at the Canadian Tire Centre in Ottawa. Ottawa took the women’s game on the strength of Maddie Stephen’s 10-point, 13-rebound performance. The men’s game featured the top ranked teams in the CIS in the No. 1 Ravens and No. 2 Gee-Gees with Carleton besting Ottawa, 82-58.
