MEN'S BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Laurier sweeps season series from crosstown rival Waterloo
Carleton 82 @ Ottawa 58
It appeared as if the Capital Hoops Classic would be tighter than ever this year, with Carleton ranked no.1 and the Gee-Gees ranked no.2 it was the perfect scenario for an all-out showdown under the bright lights of the Canadian Tire Centre. Despite a strong second half effort, the Gee-Gees were unable to complete a comeback, falling 82-58.
When Carleton started the game on a 20-6 run it seemed unlikely that the Gee-Gees would be able to mount any kind of threatening comeback. Carleton continued to pour in the points while shooting 7-for-16 in the first half, in turn forcing Ottawa to play better on the defensive end. Phil Scrubb was in his usual form scoring 19 points and three assists on the night.
“Honestly I was shocked with my team in the first half. There were missed layups and missed opportunities throughout the entire first half which is unlike the team that we usually are. I really have no explanation for it - I thought we would have come out a lot looser than we did. We were extremely nervy,” said Gee-Gees head coach James Derouin.
“We have to take a look at some things and watch some video because I don’t think we played all that differently than last time we played them. This game changes nothing of where we are in the standings and what our goal is, we just have to address some issues.”
After being down by as much as 25 points at the halftime break, the garnet grey went on a 15-2 on run midway through the third frame to close the gap to 12 points. Their strong play on both sides of the ball had the crowd of 6,604 thousand on its feet for most of the third quarter. But despite their efforts the deficit was simply too big for the Gee-Gees to overcome as they failed to break a long streak of losses at the Capital Hoops Classic.
“I think the same thing happened as last time - we seemed very shaky and nervous in the beginning of the game and that killed us. We need to do the simple stuff like rebound and make shots close to the hoop. You are not going to beat a team like Carleton without doing the fundamentals,” said point guard Mehdi Tihani. “We need to go practice, regroup and look at the things we did wrong.”
Several missed opportunities close to net hurt the Gee-Gees in the first half as they shot 9-for-36, an uncharacteristic number for uOttawa. Johnny Berhanemeskel attempted to put the team on his back but struggled at times at finding his comfort zone. The fourth-year guard finished with 12 while Terry Thomas was the Gee-Gees high scorer at 13.
Despite the loss, the Gee-Gees will still hold down the second spot in the OUA East standings with a record of 12-2. Both losses have come at the hands of the Ravens.
“We will look at this game long and hard that’s for sure. It’s important because we will hopefully be playing them again in the playoffs. They are the best team in the country for a reason so we have to give them some credit but we also need to come out and play to our full potential,” said Vikas Gill who finished the game with nine points.
uOttawa will be back in action at Monpetit hall this weekend when they face York University on Friday night followed by Queens University on Saturday.

McMaster 88 @ Guelph 59
Guelph, Ont. (January 22, 2014) - The Guelph Gryphon's men's basketball team were defeated by the visiting CIS No. 6 McMaster Marauders 88-59 on Wednesday night at the W.F. Mitchell Centre. The loss pushes the Gryphon's record to 4-11 on the season.
Â
Guelph's Taylor Boers led all Gryphon's with 14 points. Daniel Dooley also chipped in with 10 points and two rebounds.
Â
McMaster's Aaron Redpath led all scorers with 15 points, while Nathan McCarthy had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Â
The first quarter opened with both sides exchanging baskets. Guelph's Michel Clark sunk a 3-pointer to give them the 7-6 lead early. Mac followed that up with points on consecutive possessions, including a 3-pointer, to give them the 11-7 lead. McMaster extended their lead to 17-10 after another 3-ball from the Marauders. Later in the quarter, McMaster's Leon Alexander drove the lane for the bucket to put them up 20-10 with a minute and a half to play in the first. Good ball movement from McMaster allowed them to expose soft spots in the Gryphon's defense, leading to a few easy buckets. A long, buzzer beating two-pointer from McMaster's Taylor Black gave the Marauder's a 24-11 lead after the first quarter.
Â
McMaster extended their lead to 29-13 early in the second thanks to consistent jump shots from the Marauder players. Guelph knew they would be in tough against the OUA West leading Marauder's, and that was definitely the case in the first half as scoring was at a premium for the Gryphon's. McMaster's size, skill, and speed not only presented a terrible mismatch for the Gryphon's, but also showcased why they are the nation's sixth ranked team. Another McMaster three-pointer gave them a 41-13 lead with two and a half minutes to go in the first half. Despite the huge deficit the Gryphon's still played with plenty of heart and hustle. This was especially exemplified when Guelph's Michel Clark raced back on defense for a huge block on a Marauder breakaway, giving the home crowd reason to cheer. Daniel Dooley hit a running buzzer beater to cut McMaster's lead to 41-18 at the half.
Â
Taylor Boers opened the second half with a deep three for Guelph. A running floater from Boers on the Gryphon's next possession made it a 47-23 game for the Marauder's. Boers followed that play up with another three for Guelph. While Boers' strong play for the Gryphon's hoped to be the spark Guelph needed, the Marauders offense was also hitting on all cylinders, preventing the Gryphon's from cutting into the lead with any significance. Boers finished the quarter with an impressive 14 points. While Mac continued to pound the Gryphon's on the scoreboard, the significance of this game should not be overlooked. Young Gryphon's such as first year players Taylor Boers, Daniel Dooley, and Drew Walford all saw significant playing time against one of the premier teams in Canada. There are no doubt growing pains involved in playing with a young team, but hopefully this learning experience will pay dividends down the line for this Gryphon team.
Â
With the outcome of the game all but decided heading into the final frame, the Gryphon's did well to maintain their intensity throughout the contest. Guelph's Adam Kemp is deserving of a mention. Being a young big man can be a challenging endeavor at times, and tonight Kemp was tasked with guarding one of the top centre's in the OUA, McMaster's Taylor Black. Kemp consistently displayed heart and hustle throughout the contest while also contributing with 7 points and five rebounds. The game would end in an 88-59 victory for the Marauders.
Â
The Gryphon's tip off again this Saturday, on the road against the Laurier Golden Hawks.

LONDON, Ont. – Strong defence and a double-double from guard Enrico Diloreto helped the Windsor Lancers defeat the Western Mustang's men's basketball team 67-50 on Wednesday night at Alumni Hall.
Â
The loss ends the Mustangs four-game winning streak and gives the team a 6-9 record on the season, good for fourth in the OUA West Division. The Lancers move to 10-5 on the year, and sit in sole possession of second place in the West, only four points behind the division-leading McMaster Marauders.

Â
Despite Western having three players with more than 10 points, the Lancers strong defensive play proved to be one of the game's main factors, and Mustangs head coach Brad Campbell noted that "Windsor defensively did an outstanding job and really took us out of our flow on offence by defending the paint and perimeter."
Â
Both teams started off the game strong, trading points until midway through the opening quarter when the Lancers began to pull away with a 7-2 run to finish the opening ten minutes up 17-11. Windsor carried their momentum over into the second frame, outscoring the Mustangs 17-9 to take a 34-20 lead into the half. Â
The Lancers kept the momentum going in the second half, taking the third quarter 16-12 to take an 18-point lead into the final quarter. Western battled back in the fourth, outscoring the Lancers 18-17, however it wasn't enough as Windsor claimed a 67-50 victory.
