Banner Season: Windsor women, Ottawa men lead after first day of championship play
Markham, Ont. – The defending champion Ottawa Gee-Gees men hold a three stroke lead, while the Windsor Lancers women lead by two strokes as Day 1 of the OUA golf championships wrapped up at Angus Glen Golf Club in Markham, Ont.
The Gee-Gees shot a combined team score of 295 on Monday, with the Laurier Golden Hawks (298) and Western Mustangs (303) rounding out the top three teams. Windsor’s women combined for a total of 242, ahead of the Waterloo Warriors (244) and defending champion Toronto Varsity Blues (248).
Individually, Ottawa’s Anthony Brodeur leads the men’s individual standings as the only golfer to shoot under par on the day. Brodeur led all golfers with five birdies on the day and sits at -2 (70).
There is a log jam for second place as Laurier’s Jaron Brown, Ottawa’s Nicholas Workun, Guelph’s Justin Allen and Windsor’s Jarrod Smith all sit two strokes back with an even round of 72, while three players sit at +1 and five at +2, making the individual title still anyone’s to claim on Day 2.
The women’s individual standings are equally as close as Toronto’s Mackenzie Rice and Windsor’s Alyssa Getty co-lead with rounds of 79.
Windsor’s Jamie Oleksiew and Waterloo’s Elanna Lachaine-DeMarchi and Olivia Richards sit just one stroke back, all racking up rounds of 80 on Day 1. In addition, four golfers sit three strokes back, making Day 2 sure to be full of changes on the Top 10 leaderboard.
The 2019 OUA golf championships wraps up tomorrow (Oct. 8) with Round 2 set to start at 8:30 a.m.
