NEW GRYPHON COACH TEED UP FOR 2005
July 14, 2005
Director of Athletics, Tom Kendall, is pleased to announce the hiring of Connie Deckert as the new men's and women's golf coach at the University of Guelph. Deckert replaces 3-time OUA Coach of the Year, Doug Percival, who guided the golf program for 17 years. During his tenure, the Gryphs were perennial contenders and placed out of the top 3 on only three occasions during the previous 13 years.
Coach Deckert is no stranger to golf. This former high-level amateur player's credentials include runner-up Ontario Junior 1969, LPGA Tour 1972 and LPGA Qualifying School 1973. She has also been club champion at Elmira Golf Club and the Cutten Club in Guelph.
Deckert is President and CEO of Motivair Canada, an Elmira company which makes mufflers.
Upon her announcement, Deckert stated, "last year, I had the pleasure of working with the Women's team. It's a double thrill to have the opportunity to lead both the men's and women's programs in 2005. I have put together a team of assistant coaches including Todd McGrath head pro at the Cutten Club. It is my hope that the athletes will have fun, learn more about the game and be contenders for the OUA titles."
Kendall commented, "I am exited to have a quality individual such as Connie be a part of our coaching staff. I'm confident that our golfers will find her to be both knowledgeable and able to help them improve their games. No doubt, Connie will continue Guelph 's tradition of success in golf."
Try-outs for the Gryphons begin in early September and the team will be selected for the first competition on September 23rd.
