Toronto, Western celebrate large medal haul on Day 1 of competition
OTTAWA, Ont. - After day one of exciting action at the OUA Women’s Fencing Championship, hosted by the Carleton Ravens at the Norm Fenn Gymnasium, the Toronto Varsity Blues lead the way with four medals.
The Varsity Blues opened the day with a dominant clean sweep in the Foil competition. Christie Lee defeated teammate Siobhan Drysdale in the gold medal match and Jiahua Li capped off the team’s strong showing with a win in the bronze medal match over Western Mustang Danilla Xing. Toronto continued its display of prowess with a silver in the Epee from Donna Vakalis.
The Mustangs took control of the Sabre and secured an all-Western final between Kayla Lambie and Victoria Edwards, with Edwards taking gold. The team also picked up a bronze medal in the Epee, with Olga Nova defeating Toronto’s Leanna Lui.
The remaining medals came from the York Lions, who took home gold in the Epee as Vanesa Lacas-Warrick triumphed over the competition, and the RMC Paladins, who got themselves onto to the podium with a bronze in the Sabre as Haley Saulnier defeated fellow Paladin Alexandra Horeczy.
