Vieira, Harry, Ferraro named Football Players of the Week
Burlington, Ont. – Bryce Vieira, Jamie Harry, and Gabe Ferraro have been named University Athletics (OUA) Football Players of the Week for the period ending September 3, 2018.
Offence: Bryce Vieira, Ottawa Gee-Gees
In a home opener win over McMaster on Sunday, the Gee-Gees were powered by a massive dual-treat performance from fifth-year slotback/running back Bryce Vieira.
Getting it done both through the air and on the ground, Vieira cut up the McMaster defence to the tune of 198 combined yards (106 receiving and 92 rushing). With the game on the line, Vieira also showed off his flair for the dramatics to record what proved to be the game’s deciding play. After a short pass, Vieira managed to reel in a one-handed grab and evade six Marauders en route to the 61-yard game-winning touchdown with less than three minutes to play.
With the dynamic all-around performance, the Vaudreuil-Dorion, QC native now sits fifth in the OUA in all-purpose yards on the season.
Defence: Jamie Harry, Ottawa Gee-Gees
2017 U SPORTS First Team All-Canadian and First Team OUA All-Star Jamie Harry turned in another stellar performance in Week 2 of the young OUA season, helping his Gee-Gees topple the McMaster Marauders 18-11.
The #17 ranked CFL prospect (3rd OUA, 7th U SPORTS) registered eight tackles, one interception for 15 yards, one fumble recovery, and one pass breakup. Harry also leveled a show-stopping hit on the opposing quarterback forcing the ball loose, ultimately resulting in an incomplete pass.
Harry leads the OUA interceptions (2), interception returns (30 yards), and is tied for fifth in tackles (13.5) and tackles per game (6.8).
Special Teams: Gabe Ferraro, Guelph Gryphons
Mississauga native Gabe Ferraro was in fine form on Labour Day, showcasing the top-tier ability that has made him a two-time All-Canadian during his Gryphons career.
The Leadership & Organizational Management major was a perfect 4-for-4 on field goals against York, with a 29-yarder in the first half, followed by makes of 42, 29, and 47, respectively, in the second half to help put the game out of reach against the York Lions.
Ferraro, who last season set a U SPORTS single-season record with 33 made field goals, also averaged 41 yards per punt while pinning the Lions inside their own 20-yard line on three separate occasions.
