Joseph, Metcalfe, Liegghio named Football Players of the Week
Burlington, Ont. – Cedric Joseph, Daniel Metcalfe, and Marc Liegghio have been named Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Football Players of the Week for the period ending October 7, 2018.
Offence: Cedric Joseph, Western Mustangs
Fourth-year running back Cedric Joseph tallied an incredible 355 yards and three touchdowns on just 17 carries to help lead the Western football team to the 66-14 win over the Windsor Lancers at TD Stadium.
Joseph’s first major of the day helped extend the Mustangs’ early lead just seconds into the second frame, running 90 yards to the house to put Western up 23-7. Joseph continued to dominate the running game for Western, earning a 71-yard touchdown late in the second quarter to extend the lead to 32-7 for the Mustangs. He would add one more to the Mustangs' total in the half.
The Montreal, Que. native tallied all 355 of his yards in the first half alone, coming up just 40 yards shy of the all-time U SPORTS record for yards in a game (395). With his team up big at halftime, Joseph sat for the remainder of the game, to finish with the Western record for single-game rushing yards and settling for the third-most in U SPORTS history.
Defence: Daniel Metcalfe, Windsor Lancers
Daniel Metcalfe was nothing short of amazing against the defending Vanier Cup champion Western on Thursday, proving to be a one-man thorn in the Mustangs’ side.
The third year business major stuffed the stat sheet for his Lancers in the tough matchup, acting as a difference maker against the typically sure-handed purple and white. One of Metcalfe’s big plays on the day was an interception against QB Chris Merchant, which he proceeded to run back 64 yards to set up the Lancers first TD of the game. He would then follow that up in the second half with a defensive touchdown of his own.
Dan also led both teams in total tackles with 10.5, while forcing two fumbles against the Mustangs who had yet to allow a single turnover in their first five games.
Special Teams: Marc Liegghio, Western Mustangs
The Mustangs put forth a strong all-around effort against the Windsor Lancers, and playing his role to perfection was Marc Liegghio, whose boot was as steady as they come in Week 7.
The touchdown-happy purple ponies gave Liegghio several opportunities to add to his impressive point total on the day, with the kicker connecting on all seven of his extra point attempts. Beyond that, however, Liegghio also made sure the Mustangs put points on the board even when they didn’t make it to the endzone. He wrapped up the first half with his first field goal of the day from 35 yards out, before adding two more to his total in the third frame (31 yards, 36 yards). His final boot came in the form of a chip shot; an 11-yarder with just minutes left on the clock to put the final cherry on top of the team’s emphatic win.
Overall, Liegghio finished the game with 20 points.
