Ford, Ternowski, Bannatyne, Domagala named Football Players of the Week
Burlington, Ont. – Tre Ford, Tyler Ternowski, Will Bannatyne, and Michael Domagala have been named University Athletics (OUA) Football Players of the Week for the period ending August 26, 2018.
Offence: Tre Ford & Tyler Ternowski, Waterloo Warriors
It was no secret that the Waterloo Warriors offence would be good, but their on-field display in Week 1 was truly something to behold, sparked in large part by this week’s co-offensive players of the week – Tre Ford and Tyler Ternowski.
The dynamic duo was simply incredible against the Windsor Lancers and their numbers proved it. In only his eighth OUA game and first as a starter, Ford went 25-for-28 (89% completion rate), with 463 passing yards and six touchdown passes. The six majors set an all-time Waterloo record and fell just one shy of the OUA record. Ford also ran five times for 58 yards, which included a 20-yard TD run.
On the receiving end of many of Ford’s accurate tosses – 11 to be exact – was Ternowski. Among those 11 catches, the talented receiver hauled in four touchdown passes, including an 83-yard major. He would finish the night with 289 total receiving yards. Ternowski tied an all-time OUA record with his 4 TD receptions.
Defence: Will Bannatyne, Queen’s Gaels
The Queen’s showcased their offensive prowess against the York Lions on Sunday, but one of their standouts for the game came on the defensive side of the ball.
Linebacker Will Bannatyne notched five solo tackles, along with one assisted, to total 5.5 for the game. With the Gaels down 12-10 in the final minute of the first half, however, Bannatyne notched his biggest play of the game, forcing a fumble on Lions quarterback Brett Hunchak and recovering it at midfield. The Gaels then quickly converted the turnover into points, as they connected for a late touchdown pass to hold the halftime lead.
To round out his day, Bannatyne also notched one pass breakup.
Special Teams: Michael Domagala, Carleton Ravens
The Carleton Ravens put up a valiant effort against the defending Vanier Cup champion Western Mustangs to open their 2018 season, and a big part of how the game played out was a result of the booming boot of Michael Domagala.
The Ravens kicker connected on three field goals in the game, while adding a pair of extra points to bring his total output to 11 points for the game.
His first field goal came in the first quarter, connecting on a 20-yarder to open the game’s scoring. From there, Domagala took it to another level. His second make – a 42-yarder - came in the second quarter to give the Ravens the 6-3 lead, but he saved his best for last. After a Mustangs comeback in the second half gave Western the lead, Domagala stepped up for a game-tying 50-yard make with just one second left on the clock to send the game to overtime.
