BURLINGTON, Ont. - The following athletes have been named Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Football Players of the Week for the period ending October 24, 2016.
OFFENCE: Mitchell Baines (Ottawa, Ont.) – 5th yr. – Ottawa
It was a fifth and final season to remember for uOttawa Gee-Gees receiver Mitchell Baines (Ottawa, Ont.) who has been named OUA Offensive Player of the Week.
Representing his hometown Gee-Gees, the fifth-year social science and criminology major had 10 catches for 113 yards as uOttawa broke the hearts of Queen’s Gaels fans across the province with a 42-41 OT victory.
With Queen’s needing a win to punch their ticket to the postseason, Baines somehow hauled in the game winning pass to score a two-point convert against Queen’s in overtime giving the Gee-Gees the narrow win.
The 6’2” receiver finished the regular season as the national leader in yards (984), receptions (65), and yards per game (123.0).
Baines and the Gee-Gees will be out to avenge their Panda Game loss earlier in the season as they travel across town on Saturday to take on the rival Carleton Ravens in the quarter-finals.
DEFENCE: Hassan Barry (St. George, Ont.) – 3rd yr. – McMaster
McMaster’s Hassan Barry (St. George, Ont.) was all over the field on Saturday and has been selected as OUA Defensive Player of the Week as a result.
Barry, a third-year political science major, had 6.5 tackles and two sacks for a loss of 11 yards. The 6’1”, 325 lbs defensive tackle also had a pair of forced fumbles, one of which he recovered, in the No. 5 ranked Marauders tight 19-18 loss to the rival No. 3 Mustangs.
Appearing in all eight games this season for the Marauders, the St. George, Ont. native had 18 tackles and three sacks.
Barry and the Marauders will now shift their focus to Saturday afternoon when they host the rival Guelph Gryphons in a rematch of the 2014 Yates Cup.
SPECIAL TEAMS: Marc Liegghio (Woodbridge, Ont.) – 1st yr. – Western
Western kicker Marc Liegghio (Woodbridge, Ont.) has been named OUA Special Teams Player of the Week after he booted the Mustangs into the playoffs in first place.
Liegghio, who attends King’s College, had a team high 11 points for the Mustangs including three field goals from 21, 25, and 28 yards.
His only miss on the afternoon came on a 32 yard attempt late in the fourth quarter but the Mustangs rookie got just enough on it that Western came away with the eventual game winning rouge.
In his first season in OUA, the 5’8”, 191 lbs kicker finished the year first in points (103) and second in field goals made (22).
As a result of finishing first, Liegghio and the Mustangs will have a week off as they prepare to host a Yates Cup semifinal at TD Stadium on November 5.
