Roberts, Heathcote and Mesher named OUA Football Players of the Week

HAMILTON, Ont. - The following athletes have been named Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Football Players of the Week for the period ending September 28, 2015.
OFFENCE: James Roberts (Cambridge, ON) – 2nd yr. – Guelph
Guelph’s second year quarterback James Roberts (Cambridge, Ont.) had his way with the Ottawa defence this week, throwing 25 completions on 35 attempts for 391 yards and four touchdowns in a 48-26 victory.
The second-year Arts student-athlete also snuck into the endzone on a five yard rushing TD to account for his fifth touchdown of the day.
It was a personal best for the 6'0", 185 lbs quarterback, who set career highs in completions, passing yards, touchdown passes, and completion percentage (71.4%) en route to a 48-26 win over the Gee-Gees.
Roberts and the Gryphons will look to improve to 6-0 as they travel to Kingston, Ont. this weekend to take on the Queen’s Gaels. Kick-off is set for 1pm, live on OUA.tv.
DEFENCE: Jacob Heathcote (Aldergrove, B.C.) – 2nd yr. – McMaster
McMaster’s Jake Heathcote (Aldergrove, B.C.) takes home OUA Defensive Player of the Week honours for Week 5 after a stellar performance against the York Lions during the Marauders 67-10 Homecoming win.
The 6'4" 230 lbs linebacker led all tacklers for the Marauders with 6 solo tackles and two assisted tackles, while pulling in two interceptions, one which he returned for a 22-yard touchdown to give Mac a 17-0 first-quarter lead.
The second-year Commerce student-athlete leads all McMaster defenders with 18 tackles, including two tackles for a loss, this season.
McMaster heads down to Windsor, Ont. this Saturday, looking to improve to 4-1 as they take on the Lancers. The action gets started at 1pm, live on OUA.tv.
SPECIAL TEAMS: Nathan Mesher (Waterloo, Ont.) – 1st yr. – Laurier
Laurier kicker Nathan Mesher (Waterloo, Ont.) was responsible for 12 of the Golden Hawk’s 18 points Saturday, on his way to OUA Special Teams Player of the Week honours.
The first-year Business student-athlete connected on a field goal from 47 yards out, the second longest boot in OUA this season. Mesher is now 9 for 10 this season, which ties him for the second best kicking percentage in the league. He finished the afternoon a perfect 4-for-4.
The 6'0" 165 lbs kicker also improved his punting game in the 22-18 loss to Windsor, averaging 41.1 yards per punt, eight yards better than his average entering the game.
Laurier will now travel across town to take on the rival Waterloo Warriors in the "Battle of Waterloo" Saturday afternoon at 1:00pm.
