Vandervoort, Poulin and Wamsley named OUA Football Players of the Week
HAMILTON, Ont. - The following athletes have been named Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Football Players of the Week for the period ending August 31, 2015.
OFFENCE: Danny Vandervoort (Barrie, Ont.) – 3rd yr. – McMaster
McMaster receiver Danny Vandervoort had a day to remember to kick-off the 2015 OUA football season on Sunday.
The third-year Sociology student scored four touchdowns as the Marauders opened their Yates Cup title defence with a 55-33 road victory against the University of Toronto Varsity Blues.
Vandervoort recorded his first major score on an 89-yard reception from quarterback Asher Hastings in the second quarter to give McMaster a 17-16 lead.
With four touchdowns on the day, Vandervoort tied the OUA single game record for receiving touchdowns in a game.
Last season, Vandervoort had 44 catches for 683 yards and 5 TDs.
After a Labour Day bye, the Marauders return to the field on Sept. 12 for a semifinals rematch against the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees.
DEFENCE: Jean-Gabriel Poulin (St. Nicholas, Que.) – 2nd yr. – Western
The Western Mustangs defence smothered the Windsor Lancers on Sunday thanks in large part to the performance of Jean-Gabriel Poulin.
Poulin recorded a team-high six tackles, including four solo tackles, in the Mustangs 76-7 victory over the Lancers.
With 6:22 remaining in the third quarter, the 2nd year King’s College student, scooped up a loose ball and returned it 15 yards for the touchdown.
Appearing in six games last season, Poulin had 16.5 tackles and one sack for the Mustangs.
Western is back in action on Monday, Sept. 7 when they host the York Lions at TD Stadium.
SPECIAL TEAMS: Dillon Wamsley (London, Ont.) – 4th yr. – Queen's
Dillon Wamsley was perfect for the Queen’s Gaels against the Carleton Ravens on Sunday, hitting both of his two field goals as well as converting all four extra points.
Wamsley’s 10 points scored were the difference in the final score of the game, as Queen’s defeated Carleton 34-24.
The fourth-year Arts & Science student, also averaged 36.9 yards per punt on seven punts for a total of 258 yards.
Wamsley had seven kickoffs in the game for 341 yards, averaging 48.7 yards per kick.
After a big Week 1 victory against the rival Ravens, the Gaels will head out on the road this weekend as they travel to Ottawa, Ont. to take on the Gee-Gees on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
