Football Players of the Week- September 19th, 2017
Offence: Lucas McConnell – Waterloo Warriors
Lucas McConnell had a performance for the ages in Waterloo's 45-43 comeback victory over Carleton on Saturday. McConnell threw for 477 yards and 2 touchdown passes while adding 34 yards on the ground and 1 rushing TD.
McConnell took every snap in the game and put his Warriors on his back in the second half where Waterloo scored 5 TD's in a span of 19:57, outscoring the Ravens 35-7 en route to the two point victory.
The victory against the Ravens puts Waterloo with a perfect 4-0 record.
Defence: Robbie Smith – Laurier Golden Hawks
Defensive Line Robbie Smith (Brampton, Ont.), set out a defensive showcase in the Golden Hawk’s game against the Queen’s Gaels. The 4th year kinesiology student lead the team with 4.5 sacks over 21 yards to keep Laurier’s perfect record in the season.
With his performance at this game, Smith broke a single game sack record for Wilfrid Laurier with 4.5 sacks breaking Kwaku Boetangs record of 4 in 2014. Smith is now second in the league for number of sacks with 5.5 to his name. Also, Smith is now third in the league for sack yards with 33 yards to his name.
Special Teams: Game Ferraro – Guelph Gryphons
Gryphons fourth year kicker Gabe Ferraro takes home Special Teams Player of the Week honours after setting a new, single-game career-high with five made field goals Saturday at U of T.
Ferraro, who currently leads the OUA with 15 made field goals, finished the day 5-for-6 vs U of T, with makes of 30, 25, 39, 43 and 26.
Ferraro also had a solid day punting when called upon, averaging 37.5 yards per punt while twice pinning U of T inside their own 20-yard line.
