Derek Wendel posted his third career 500-yard passing game in a 54-20 win over York on Friday night at Gee-Gees Field. Fellow fifth-year Mitchell Baines was on the end of 215 of Wendel's 514 total yards passing as the Gee-Gees moved to 5-1 on the season.
Baines now ranks first in CIS with 128 yards per game, and added two touchdowns to his season total of seven, which ranks third in the nation. "We really wanted to show today that we are one of the best teams in the OUA," said Baines, whose first touchdown was a 49-yard bomb in the second quarter.
Tyler McLaren was another active target for Wendel, pulling in seven receptions for 99 yards, while running back Greg Cherniak powered his way to 80 yards and two touchdowns on the ground.
"It's gratifying to see those guys perform," noted Gee-Gees head coach Jamie Barresi of the different performers within the game. "We had a lot of confidence in Greg [Cherniak] and I'm glad he got a chance to show what he can do. Tremblay and Donald Shaw are very deserving as well and they did a good job."
The Lions scored the opening touchdown of the game to lead 7-3 early. Adam Adeboboye was the receiver of that touchdown and led the Lions with nine receptions for 139 yards on the night. Quarterback Brett Hunchak was 26-40 in passing for 329 yards, while Ottawa shut down the York running game and allowed just 93 yards on the ground.
Wendel finished 31-42 in passing with no interceptions, and added a one-yard touchdown of his own in the first quarter. At halftime the pivot had amassed 278 yards and Ottawa led 26-13.
"We had something to prove here a little bit," said Barresi. "I'm proud of the way we managed the game today."
