EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (May 8, 2015) – Chris Ackie, a member of the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men's football team, is off to chase his NFL dreams this weekend as he earned an invitation to attend the New York Giants rookie mini-camp.
Ackie, a native of Cambridge, Ont., is one of 11 Canadian players who will attend the camp that sees roughly 60 players looking to impress the Giants coaching staff.
Ackie is coming off his best season with the purple and gold. The fourth year communication studies major was named a CIS First Team All-Canadian and an OUA First Team All-Star after recording a career-high 48.5 tackles, seventh most in the conference. He also registered three pass breakups, an interception and a sack over the course of the season.
At the CFL combine in Toronto in April, Ackie was one of the stars of the weekend as he had an outstanding testing session, finishing first overall in both the 40-inch vertical and the broad jump. He was also third overall in the 3-cone drill, tops among all defensive backs.
The invite kicks off what is sure to be an exciting couple of days for the Hawks defensive back. Ackie, currently ranked 11th on the CFL's top prospect list, is a projected first round pick by some as the CFL hosts it's 2015 draft on Tuesday evening, May 12.
