Although the Western Mustangs just finished spring training camp and won't see their first game until August 30, defensive lineman Daryl Waud will continue to be in action over the next two weeks as he's accepted invitations to participate in mini-camps with both Washington and the New York Giants.
Already a top prospect for the upcoming CFL Draft, the Hamilton native will first suit up in Giants camp this week before taking part in Washington's mini-camp the following week.
The two mini-camps will provide Waud with the chance to showcase his skills in front of NFL scouts and coaches in the hopes of earning an NFL contract. If signed, Waud would become the second Mustangs player since 2009 to earn a spot in the league after former Western defensive lineman Vaughn Martin was drafted in the fourth round by the San Diego Chargers. Martin played four seasons in San Diego, and signed with Kansas City this past February following stints with both the Miami Dolphins and Detroit Lions.
A three-time OUA all-star and two-time CIS all-Canadian, Waud has anchored the Mustangs defensive line for the past four seasons, racking up 81 total tackles, including 55 solo stops, along with seven sacks and two interceptions throughout his time in purple and white. This past season the Hamilton, Ont., native earned OUA first team all-star and first team all-Canadian honours after recording 14.5 tackles and three sacks in eight regular season contests.
Along with his OUA and CIS awards, Waud was one of two CIS players invited to the 90th East West Shrine Game in St. Petersburg, Florida, this past January where he recorded two tackles to help Team East record a 19-3 victory.
