Two of the best defences in the conference came to play and made life miserable for both offences in a first half that saw each side turn the ball over four times in the 107th Yates Cup presented by Pioneer.
Guelph quarterback Jazz Lindsey, who was listed as "questionable" before the game, continued to struggle in Yates Cup. Throwing three interceptions in 2012, Lindsey was picked off three times on his first six passes of the game before getting pulled in place of rookie James Roberts.
Two of those interceptions went to McMaster cornerback and first-team all-Canadian Joey Cupido, who now has a jaw-dropping 14 postseason interceptions in 14 career postseason games.
No turnover was more costly, though, than the one Roberts threw. The rookie replacement hit McMaster defensive lineman Mike Kashak right in the chest with a pass with 9:11 left in the second quarter. Kashak promptly returned the ball 30 yards for a touchdown, causing the hometown faithful at Ron Joyce Stadium to erupt.
The play gave McMaster its first lead of the game, after they fell down 9-2 late in the first quarter when Guelph running back Rob Farquharson gained the corner and ran 41 yards for a touchdown.
