McMaster's Tyler Crapigna breaks OUA career field goal record
For the second time in less than a year, OUA's all-time field goal record has fallen once again.
For the second time in less than a year, OUA's all-time field goal record has fallen once again.
Less than one year after former Western Mustang and current Winnipeg Blue Bomber standout Lirim Hajrullahu sent his record-setting 77th field goal soaring through the up-rights, McMaster Marauders kicker Tyler Crapigna broke the record with a 20-yard field goal, the 78th of his career, late in the 2nd quarter vs. Western.
Crapigna was a perfect 3/3 on the day making field goals from 32, 20 and 14 yards in No. 4 McMaster's 32-29 upset over No. 3 Western Mustangs.
Crapigna has been good at an 86 percent rate this season, making 19/22 of his attempts, the longest of which was a 44-yarder.
In his OUA career, Crapigna has made 79/92 field goal attempts – a rate of 86 percent – and also made the game winning kick in McMaster's Vanier Cup victory against Laval in 2011. He's never missed an extra point attempt and holds the school record for most career points.
Coming into the 2014 season, Crapgina was unsure if he'd even have a shot at catching Hajrullahu's mark of 77 field goals. For a kicker whose career high was 18 field goals in a season, Crapigna needed to match that mark in order to eclipse the record—with two games remaining he has already tied his career high.
Crapigna now sits at 79 career field goals and has his sights set on the CIS record of 82 held by William Dion of Sherbooke who played from 2008-2012.
