Windsor, ON - The Windsor Lancer Football team opened their 2014 season with a hard fought 39-30 loss to the visiting Queen's Gaels in the Labour Day Classic at Alumni Field.
The Lancers were led by quarterback Austin Kennedy who threw three touchdowns for 393 yards and receiver Evan Pszczonak who had 187 yards receiving and two touchdowns. Beau led all Lancer rushers with 115 yards, while Louis Polyzois led the Blue & Gold defensively with 10 tackles.
Billy McPhee led the way for Queen's as he threw for 259 yards completing 17 of 35 passes for three touchdowns. Jesse Andrews finished with 93 yards on the ground and a touchdown while Doug Corby had 125 yards receiving and a touchdown of his own.
In the first quarter the Gaels used the wind to their advantage. The Queen's defense held Kennedy and the Lancers at bay to set up strong field position for the Gaels. Dillon Wamsley knocked off a 24-yard field goal to give Queen's an early lead. Andrews then came through on third and goal for a three yard score.
After Windsor conceded a safety, Wamsley tacked on his second field goal of the game, this one a 38-yard strike and Queen's opened up a 15-0 lead.
The Lancer offence came alive in the second quarter as they scored on two straight possessions. First Kennedy hit Pszczonak for a 90-yard touchdown then he found Whitfield, with an 11-yard score. After a Windsor rouge the Lancers had tied the game at 15-15.
After conceding a safety to the Gaels, Windsor traded the field position for a chance on offence and Beau Lumley rushed for a touchdown which was followed with a two-point convert making it 23-17.
Penalties forced the Gaels into tough yardage situations but after a successful completion on third down McPhee finished off the play finding Alex Carroll in the endzone to give the Gaels a 24-23 lead at the half.
Windsor re-took the lead early in the third quarter as Pszczonak hauled in his second score of the game and the Lancers were out in front 30-24. Neither team was able to find the scoresheet for the remainder of the quarter and Windsor held the six point lead heading into the final frame.
The Gaels took advantage of a 15-yard Lancer penalty early in the fourth as found Peter Hannon on the goal line to put the Gaels up by one, 31-30.
McPhee put the Gaels up with another touchdown pass late into the fourth, this time hitting Corby. Wamsley added a rouge to give the Gaels a nine point lead 39-30 late into the game.
Windsor will host the Laurier Golden Hawks on Fan Appreciation Day this Saturday, September 6th at 1:00pm.
