Moore, Newton and Ferraro named OUA football players of the week

HAMILTON, Ont. – The following student-athletes have been named OUA Football Players of the Week for the period ending October 27, 2013.
OFFENCE: Wayne Moore, McMaster Marauders, Running Back
Second-year running back Wayne Moore (Etobicoke, Ont.) was a force for the Marauders, powering for 140 yards on 22 carries in McMaster’s 41-7 quarter-final win over the Ottawa Gee-Gees. Moore set the tone early for the Marauder offence, as he carried the ball six times for 50 yards on the opening drive of the game helping his team march down the field and score a major to take an early 7-0 lead. His longest run of the game was a third quarter scamper for 24 yards giving McMaster excellent field position and allowing Tyler Crapigna to kick a field goal extending the lead to 27-7.
DEFENCE: Curtis Newton, Guelph Gryphons, Linebacker
Curtis Newton, a second-year linebacker from London, Ont., was a defensive force for the Gryphons in their 31-21 quarter-final win over the Windsor Lancers on Saturday night. The 6’2, 215 lbs. linebacker had five solo tackles, one assisted tackle and a crucial interception in the playoff victory. Newton, an Arts major, picked off quarterback Austin Kennedy, tallying a 58-yard interception return for a touchdown, which increased the Gryphons lead to 14-0 in the second quarter.
SPECIAL TEAMS: Daniel Ferraro, Guelph Gryphons, Kicker
Daniel Ferraro, a third-year from Mississauga, Ont., was instrumental in winning the battle of field position in Guelph's 31-21 quarter-final win over the Windsor Lancers. Ferraro was successful on each of his two field goal attempts, splitting the uprights from 19 and 22 yards out. He averaged 37.8 yards per punt on nine punts and was a difference maker by keeping the Lancers pinned deep in their own territory, forcing them to give up two safeties.
