Nassar, Jervis and Wamsley named OUA Football Players of the Week

HAMILTON, Ont. – The following student-athletes have been named OUA Football Players of the Week for the period ending October 13, 2013.
OFFENCE: Simon Nassar, University of Toronto Varsity Blues, Quarterback
Third-year quarterback Simon Nassar threw for 360 yards and four touchdowns leading the Varsity Blues to a 56-35 comeback victory to claim the Argo Cup in the 44th annual Red & Blue Bowl on Oct. 10. A native of Toronto, Nassar was 24-for-38 on the night for a 63% completion rate. With the Blues trailing 14-2 early in the second quarter, Nassar took charge, going 8-for-11 for 100 yards and two majors as the Blues racked up 32 points in the second quarter and took the lead for good. An English major, Nassar has averaged 366 yards in the last three outings and has thrown for eight majors in the last two games.
DEFENCE: Aaron Jervis, University of Toronto Varsity Blues, Defensive Lineman
Second-year defensive lineman Aaron Jervis recorded a career-high 7.5 tackles, two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery, one sack and one blocked punt in the Varsity Blues 56-35 Argo Cup victory. With Toronto trailing 14-2 early in the second quarter, the Oakville, Ont., native blocked Nick Naylor’s punt and recovered it himself on York’s 15-yard line to set up a Toronto field goal and bring the score within five. After 25 unanswered points, York stormed down the field at the end of the second quarter, but Jervis sacked Lions quarterback Myles Gibbon in a second and goal situation. On the ensuing play, York faked a field goal, which was intercepted by Toronto for an 88-yard interception return for a touchdown, putting the Blues up by 20 at the end of the first half.
SPECIAL TEAMS: Dillon Wamsley, Queen’s Gaels, Kicker
Dillon Wamsley (London, Ont.) put everything he had into a 52-yard field goal in the Gaels 78-21 win over Waterloo on Friday night (Oct. 11). The half-field kick tied the Gaels all-time mark set by Blaine Shore in 1979 and is tied for 12th longest in CIS history. Wamsley finished the day hitting all nine extra point attempts as well as kicking for two rouges. The Arts & Science major also recorded 11 kickoffs in the game, averaging 59.4 yards per kickoff.
